I've just had the opportunity to read Performance-The Magic of Magic and wanted to share with the rest of the Café. Hank is the same gentleman that put out the Any Ring PK Gimmick e-book which became very popular. Scott Guinn did the proof-reading and offered some of his own input to the book.

The e-book is only 32 pages long but has a lot of good information, particularly for those new to the art of magic. Even the experienced magician might pick up something that he/she hadn't thought about before. He covers several topics such as:

Misdirection
Timing & Pacing
Storyline (or Patter)
Motivation and Justification
Personality and Connecting to Your Audience
The Use of Music
Acting

While each of these topics could be a complete e-book on its own Hank gives several good ideas and examples on how to be a successful performer within each area. Hank has had the opportunity to see dozens and dozens of good magicians in his career, and I didn't read anything that I disagreed with. At the price of $15 I highly recommend his e-book as I'm sure everyone can gain something from this.

Thanks Doug,

Doug is correct, as a member of The California Magic Family, I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing the best magicians in the world perform live. John Carney, Daryl, The Pendragons, Wayne Houchin, Fielding West, Austin Brooks, Eric Buss, Danny Archer, Chris Mitchell, Woody Pittman, Gregory Wilson, Bob Sheets, Shawn McMaster, Ken Sonkin, Dave Cox, Aldo Colombini, Dana Daniels, Alex Ramon, and Losander to name a few. And local talent that stacks up against ANY magician ANYWHERE like The Flying Calamari Brothers, Timothy James, Gerry Griffin, Joel Paschal, Doug Kevilus, Zappo, David Hirata, John Gardenier, and "The Kid" Joseph Bartholomew.

In observing all of these talented performers, I looked at what made them memorable, why did the audience react so strongly, how did they literally own the room, and basically, why are they great magicians? I made many notes & observations, striving to improve my performance level. That's what this E-Book is about. It's a discussion of the things I have observed & learned from all of these fantastic magicians.

If you want to be a good performer, give it a read. You won't be disappointed. I have to give a shout out to Scott F. Guinn, he did a fantastic job proofreading this E-Book for me. Not only did he help me with the gramatical errors, but he made some fantastic suggestions with some of the wording, making the book read & flow so much better. Thank again Scott, you are a class act!

I'm also offering a special package deal with this E-Book PLUS my E-Book, "The ANY Ring PK Gimmick" for $18.95! Check it out at my store:

The advice in this book is the kind of thing we need to read over and over again. Good, solid tips on performing magic. No matter how experienced a performer you are, problems in performance always come back to the basics. Well done, Hank!

Cameron,
Thank you so much for your kind words. coming from you I take that as a great compliment. I'm sure many Café members are familiar with your fantastic contributions to the Magic Community. I own many of your effects & DVD's. I agree with you, this is the type of material all professional magicians need to spend time thinking about and working on if they want to be a true performer. I have learned so much from watching the great magicians of our time perform and being able to sit and talk with them, learn from them. I am very fortunate to be a part of the California Magic dinner Theatre family.

Thanks,
Hank

Hank has done a good job on a difficult task. Putting the intangibles of performance in the written word is, indeed, daunting. I know--I've tried it myself! For the pittance Hank is charging you are getting a wonderful value. Read this book with pen in hand and pad handy. Take notes, ask yourself questions, decide WHY you agree or disagree with what Hank has to say about these important issues. You'll be a better magician for it!

Thanks Scott,

I totally agree that EVERY magician who wants to perform for a lay audience should look beyond the mechanics and "canned patter" of an effect.

Hey Café,
I just wanted to give a quick heads up. I just finished re-building my entire website and the previous links in this thread to my STORE PAGE are no longer valid. To purchase this E-Book directly from my website, use this link:

http://www.morfinmagic.com/html/store.html

After studying some various marketing materials, I have "un-linked" my STORE PAGE from my sites navigation. Since the site is aimed at booking gigs, I've found that having my STORE PAGE with products for magicians can be considered a negative by some potential clients. The only way to access the page is through the direct link I posted above.

Lastly, to all the folks who have recently purchased this E-Book from me I want to say thanks. If you have not done so, please take a minute of your valuable time to post your comments on this thread.

Thanks again,
Hank

Hey Café,

I just wanted to take a minute to let you know that I've dropped the price of my E-book, "Performance: The Magic of Magic" to $9.95. That's a 30% discount! This discount is a temporary one, I wanted to give some people who may have been on the fence about purchasing this a chance to "take the plunge". I truly believe that the materials discussed will help you to look at who you are as a performer, something that is just as important to a professional magician as mastering a sleight or learning some new "killer effect". You can get it at my web site store:

http://www.morfinmagic.com/html/store.html

Or if you prefer, at Lybrary.com:

http://www.lybrary.com/performance-magic......_id=4346

I've also adjusted the price of my combo deal accordingly. You can now get this e-Book and my very popular e-Book "The ANY Ring PK Gimmick" for only $13.95!!!

If you do decide to pick this up, please let me know what you think...

Thanks,
Hank

I just had the opportunity to read "Performance: The Magic of Magic". It's a well-written e-book, all the topics taught are important to performing in the real world. It seems very clear that it's written from the working experience of a magician pro. Great advice and tips for the performing magician, as well for magicians that are just starting to perform in public.
