So last year I made my Halloween costume out of balloons (http://www.partywithjeff.com/pics.html), and pulled in about $1000 in prize money. Well worth my time and very enjoyable. Unfortunately, that was half of what I could have won had I placed 1st in either competition (I won 2nd and 3rd). There are dozens and dozens of entrants in these competitions and the winners are determined by general applause. Last year I lost to Michael Phelps (8 medals, a speedo, and goggles) and the Chinese girls gymnastics team (cross-dressing frat boys in leotards). So the Olympics kicked my butt. I think there are a number of reasons for this. One, they were very relevant. Two, they were patriotic (at least Phelps was). And three, they were definitely working the humor angle. I placed as high as I did based purely on the "Oh my gosh, that's the craziest costume I've ever seen, I've never seen anything like that" factor.
Sooooo.......I need suggestions for the perfect costume. Something relevant and funny and I'll take care of the wow factor. I'm also thinking of sending out some friends to other competitions with additional costumes. Could be a good payday. Thoughts???? Thanks!

Kevin! That's right on the money.
My biggest challenge will no doubt be proportions. Balloons tend to get big and bulky. We'll have to see what happens. Any other suggestions?

On Mad Hats and Wild Wearables there are a couple of cool costume ideas. One is a buzz light year type that I thought was very neat.

My good buddy, Jack Mattson, who won Top Twister at 2009 Twist and Shout has a concept he calls "The Grabber." Check out this link:
http://www.balloonhq.com/photos/db/complete.php?id=63069 and this link: http://www.balloonhq.com/photos/db/complete.php?id=62890 The pictures do not do the concept justice. The arms are like puppet arms and can be moved around for a great effect. This could be turned into great costume. Another idea is from Dustin Queary. Check out the picture of his Godzilla costume. http://www.balloonhq.com/photos/db/complete.php?id=56843 This thing was huge, and he walked around in it on stilts. This was at T&S 2008 in Boston. |

I was thinking of going bigger this year and doing a puppet with the arms controlled like they are in the photos. Dustin won first prize a couple times back at DJ with a stilt walking Optimus Prime.
Thanks for the ideas.

I had an idea for Doc Ock robot arms that could all be controlled at once. I will have to put it together this year.

I made this balloon costume last night at the SoCal Balloon Jam. It needs a bit of work, but for a first attempt, I am happy with the results.

That's great. That's what I'm going for, I'm going to use a TAK weave on a lot of it because I think it will have a nice muscly look to it. Looks very monstrous, Steve, and the green guys not bad either.

Jeff,
Thanks for the nice comments. What does not get conveyed by pictures of the Grabber concept is the interactive fun you can have with it. I took a few pictures with Frankie holding someone, high-fiving, arm around someone's shoulder etc. I might try making the hands out of 350's instead of 646's to see how that looks and operates. All Kudos go to Jack Mattson on sharing this concept with me. I also like the head structure I came up with (he says with all humility). A couple of color changes and tweaks here and there and I think it would make a pretty good looking Taz. |

Hey Steve I have seen pictures of these "Grabbers" before.. What helps hold teh hands up?
|

Steve Yarosko Loyal user 285 Posts |
Kevin...A clear 350 secured at the wrist of the balloon hands. You hold the other end of the 350's and use them like puppet rods. I didn't have clear 350's so I used two 260's spiraled together. One 260 wasn't strong enough. Another thing that you could do is make a full body and connect the feet to your ankles and you would have a full body puppet. I think I saw Rick Mohr do this at one of the Diamond Jams a few years ago.

Yeah Rick did some sort of clown puppet I believe.
Last year when I attached feet to my feet, I kept stepping on the toes as they would bend under my feet due to my movement. They got beat up pretty good. I need to figure out a way to avoid this. Last year I used 260's for the toes so they were fairly flimsy, perhaps I'll make some fat 350 toes.

Looks Great. Is it going to be more of a mask, or will it sit above your head?

Last year my head was in the costume. And I logged about 6-7 hours on various dance floors waiting for costume contests to resolve. It was not fun. So this year I am going to leave my face exposed. I may wear it either like you are in your picture, or leave a few gaps in the weave of his shirt and look out of his chest. I am leaning toward the latter as it would make him a bit taller, my face won't be directly below his detracting from the look, and I will be able to fix the head at the exact angle I want and not worry about how my head is moving.
