There is no such race. Each riding elects a single Member of Parliament (currenly 338 seats). The party with the greatest number of seats forms the government, with that party's leader becoming the Prime Minister. Second, Henning was not the leader of the Natural Law Party of Canada; that was a guy named Neil Paterson. Had Henning won his seat, he'd have been a Member of Parliament, that's all. FWIW, the Natural Law Party if Canada was deregistered in 2004. In the three elections it contested, the party never even came close to 1% of the popular vote. The sad reality is that Henning became a national laughingstock.

I live about thirty minutes away from a very large parcel of land Doug Henning purchased fronting St. Rd. 192 near Walt Disney World and a festival shopping complex called Old Town. The Henning land was to become a theme park promoting his spiritual philosophy. There was quite a hubbub about it at the time in the 90's and concept art appeared in print and on TV. The park featured a levitating building and other illusions. The project never got off the ground.

Haha.
I dressed up as Doug Henning for Halloween when he ran with the Natural Law Party. I don't, however, see him as tarnished in any way. He was an inspiring guy and I wouldn't say he was a laughingstock at all, except that people choose nastiness at times. That's on them, not on Doug. He seemed to be a very sincere guy who, many could see, got caught up in a cult. Hence my choice for Halloween. Cults aren't generally a true laughing matter. If folks turned to nastiness, I'd say it was-as nastiness is- fear-based, maybe comic relief. I wonder if anyone tried to get him some help. He was quite ill at the time. Liver cancer? Maybe there was some hepatic encephalopathy at work. That can be a scary one, too. I like Doug a lot- he had a pet skunk, they say. Walked it on a leash, no less. Very cool- I was impressed when I read that. |
