If you want you can buy mine.... I really never liked the effect in the first place. Too much time preparing for the effect.

I have one from 20 years ago, voodoo needle, I believe the original one ever out.
I really like it, yes some prep work but boy does it kill!
It's not the size of the wand,
but the magic in it ! |

Find and buy the original Spangler prop. It is light years better than all the others.

Hi
A friend gave me the Harry Anderson NTA to play around with, but there was no ^*&+£" if you know what I mean. What is best to use (I'm in the UK) and any other tips etc. Private Message please. Thanks Joe |

It is a good effect but it was exposed on TV recently and (and here's the real reason I'd think twice about it) Harry did it everywhere. It's kind of played out. I don't think Harry's even doing it anymore. Unless you have a VERY unique twist in your presentation or shoving a needle through your arm is so "you" that you have to do it I'd consider something else for now. Come back to the needle in a few years and it'll seem fresh.

Hope someone can advise on this old chestnut.
I recently acquired this and having a little trouble with the needle 'sticking'. The accompanying doc explains that a thin coating of vaseline is necessary, but I find that this breaks down the 'stuff'. Anyone have any better suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'm headed to New Orleans this weekend and I'm checking out Harry Andersons magic shop called Sideshow. I'll see if the effect is there. I'd be interested in purchasing a voodoo needle. How much do they go for and where could I find one?

I got mine a couple of weeks ago from http://www.hocus-pocus.com . 31 bucks got me the illusion, plus some (necessary) accesories which I don't know are usually supplied.
If you are going there, I would really appreciate if you could ask them my question... and also what can be used for 'thinning' (they'll know what you mean!). thanks, Slim.

It's a really cool stunt to pull off. The one I use, if you know what I mean is a generic one. No brand name.. It works pretty good for me. To make it look more realistic since I am a man of the streets, I use a safety pin or other small objects to make it look impromptu.

I guess I'm lucky...I live in an area where this trick and many other old chestnuts are never seen.

Would it be politically incorrect to do a John Belushi Hypo thru arm effect???? Just kidding!

The other thing I have done is to put a narrow stripe of vaseline beween two stripes of the 'stuff' on my arm and then place the needle directly onto the vaseline. Hope this helps.

A little bit of dish soap works equally well.

George, that sounds useful - I'll certainly give that a try.
Brandon, I never thought of soap. I'll give that a shot (pun intended) too! Thanks to both of you.

If you are a thin person, like me, the lack of loose skin on your arm is a liabilty when performing Needle Thru the Arm. You have to press down, with your forefinger on the "needle" pretty agressively to get a sufficient "bite". This may bend the prop slightly so be careful.
A couple of other tips; I always coated the thing with vaseline before the performance, but be careful when you initially contact the arm. Don't let it slide around and cover the preparation. I always waited until the very last minute to apply the preparation before going on stage, so that it was fresh and free of any contamination. Harry used to apply the stuff right there on stage, calling it "topical antistetic" or something. I carried my needle, vaseline, jar of preparation, bottle of thinner (Bestine), "blood" and some cleaning pads in a white case with a red cross painted on the lid, which the audience saw the whole time during the performance, as if it were a First Aid Kit. I showed the bottle of Bestine (it had a fake medicine-looking label on it) and pretended to use it the sterilize my arm, but really doing nothing. The reason for this was, so that after I removed the needle, I could pour some of the Bestine on a pad and use it to completely clean away the blood and preparation and show my arm to the audience with no trace of evidence. I should also note that I always shaved the part of the arm that accepts the needle. I enjoyed performing Needle Thru the Arm, but the procedure is very involved and considering that Harry did it so often, even a few times on television, and that it has been exposed on televison, I doubt I will pick it up again in the near future. Also, doing it frequently and rehearsing it is very tough on the arm as the substances I used are not recommended to be applied to the skin. |

Interesting, Randwill.
'Bestine' sounds like the stuff I'm looking for. Does anyone in the UK know where this can be obtained, please? Last week, after performing a 'paperclipped' (card) routine, I took the paperclip, opened it out and used it instead of the needle to devastating effect. However, it didn't have the same reaction as when the 'blood' is seen to dribble out. I'll stick to the needle, I think.
