Instead of the needle or hat pin thru arm, ou should try the screwdriver thru arm. What is a hat pin supposed to be anyway? A screwdriver thru arm is more "realistic" since it uses an object that is more recognizable, and it is more "gruesome" in appearance.

And, with the hat pin, safety pins or needles, I think the lack of blood might be less an issue than it would be if you used a screwdriver. I really find the screwdriver to be unbelievable both becasue of the lack of blood and because the item is sooo blunt, it is hard to have the "penetration" play as believable and not just a geek trick. But, in fairness to Magicinsight, I haven't seen him perform and he might very well be might be able to sell this effect using a screwdriver. Mike

Turk,
Thank you very much for your thoughts. I have used both the typical hat pin version and the screw driver. I always get strong reactions from both efects. I agree with your commetns as well as the previous posts that due to the thinness and size of the hat pin, the amount of blood that comes out of the bulb is more realistic when compared to the thickness of the screwdriver. I also agree that the screwdriver version does seem to be more "gimmicky" than the hat pin. I use both according to the setting I am in. I like to use the hat pin version in a more serious envirnoment when I am presenting more "bizzare" effects or when demonstrating the power of suggestion and self-hypnonis to stop pain or when I am discussing how Native American Indian (or other cultures) went into trances to perform certain feats without feeling pain. I use the screwdriver in a more light hearted atmosphere where I jsut want to create a quick and unexpected shock. Perhaps I would talk about how my T.V. broke recently and the repairman came by to fix it (or whatever) and left his screwdriver and then bam!screwdriver thru arm. Both can be used but I would agree with you that all things considered, the hat pin (I still do not think anyone other than a magician has ever seen a large hat pin like the one used in this effect) is more "realistic" if used in a more serious setting. Thank you for your imput. Best regards, Michael

I buy it at any art supply store, where you can also get the arm preparation fluid. I'd imagine a similar product would be available at art supply stores in the UK. And although it does clean the arm very well of traces of the preparation, the can carries a warning to avoid skin contact. So I'd advise cleaning the arm with soap and water as soon as possible after a performance. I don't know if Harry Anderson (or anybody) used this solvent to clean the arm after removing the needle. On the tape I have of Harry's performance he uses a cloth to clean the arm and then displays his arm to the audience. I hit on the idea of using a folded paper towel with the Bestine poured on it for my performances because using a dry cloth to remove the prep seemed rougher on my skin, and didn't get all of it off. I didn't want to leave any clues for the people close enough to see. So far I've suffered no adverse health effects... GA, GA, GA... drooooowl :) |

Thanks again. I did go to an art-shop yesterday and they suggested I use something that would probably have taken every skin layer off my arm (and half the bone as well)!!! I couldn't really explain why I wanted it for 'on skin' use of course, but they hadn't heard of anything that is suitable for specifically removing 'the stuff'.
Anyway, next time I'm in the US, I'll pick up some bestine. Just hope it doesn't prompt awkward questions in airport security!! Thanks again, Gary

I have the Viking version. Does anyone know if the Viking is a ripoff of Anderson or vice-versa?
Also, I wonder why all the ethical folks who have been popping up lately aren't all over one of the versions of this trick as being a "ripoff". |
