Two standouts for me in the first 80 pages (that's all I've read so fare out of 223)are Marc Paul's extemely clever ideas on Magic Squares ("Square Thoughts") and Tom Lauten's "Stepping Stones."

I've gone deeper and found an extraordinary effect by Todd Landman (of Luna fame) called "The Presence of Mind." Among other things it provides a perfect adaption of Vincent Dalban's "Mental Numbers" from Annemann's Practical Mental Magic, but much more, all presented within a very believable university testing presentation.
I'm so pleased he didn't market this as I imagine many will admire it but not bother to make up their own set. I've already adapted it slightly, added a sixth reveal, and made up a set printed on blank business cards, then laminated. Robin |

This book is incredible.
I wrote back in September that there was a lot to read through and digest. Guess what, a month and a half later I have to say the same thing. Two hundred and twenty three pages of delight, divided up into 45 chapters. It boggles the mind. Every time I go back to it, I discovered something new today when I was reviewing Marc Paul’s chapter. Numbers, squares, and colors (oh my). Just when you thought everything about a concept had been explored, someone like Marc shows up and turns the whole ting on its head. The story that Tom Lauten tells in his “Stepping Stones” is fantastic, and opens possibilities I had not thought of for an item I use. While skimming through, once again I was grabbed by a title (same one as last time) Cajun Joe and the Absinthe Bar. How could you not be grabbed by that? I’ve never met Roger Ferriby (the author) but after reading this, I would love to sit down to an Absinthe with him, but no tarot cards please… His routine is everything that I love about bizarre magic. I ended today’s review by going back to Todd Landman’s “The Presence of Mind” it is something I want to put together and try out. I know in my previous post (which I cannot find) I listed other routines as being standouts for me; and I have no doubt that if I wrote my thoughts on this book next month, the list would be different again, there is just so much great material here, and so many brilliant creators (45 of them). Magic, mentalism, bizarre, gambling, you name it, it is here. Oh, and the price… Don’t tell Peter, but it is WAYYYYYY to low. Tony Iacoviello |

By the way Tony. I too can't find your previous post. I'm curious. What routines stood out for you?

I remember when the first ebooks I saw were scanned pages often not typed up. They had no menus and mostly consisted of every thought the writer has ever had in magic or mentalism, whatever the subject happened to be. They have vastly improved and range from typed up pages of every thought the magician had to the wonderful products Mike Close has produced (tip o' the hat to Lisa Close). I admit I'm not fond of reading a computer screen but I'm getting better at working with it.
Peter Duffie brings us Mind Busters 2, I missed the original, which is a large collection of mentalism pieces. From a quality standpoint the ebook is nicely done, well typed with clear illustrations and you clicky on the title of the piece you want to look at and you go there. I love that. It is well written, actually really well written, and easy to follow. So much for the technical stuff as best I can explain it. What I really enjoyed about this ebook is rather than 200 plus pages of Peters ideas, and though Peter is one of the better thinkers in magic that can get long, he has contributions from other mentalist and magicians that are compiled to make up this ebook. Some of the contributors I had not heard of before, which says more about me rather than reduces their contribution, others I am familiar with. The end result is you get a collection of works that the contributors and Peter think are workers and they are, at minimal, interesting and range up to pieces you'll want to get out and perform. I like this style of ebook, or book, because you do tend to have quality material throughout. My favorite pieces are those using the ESP cards and the impromptu appearing pieces. I found all the explanations fun to read and have worked on a number of them, performed a few for those "show me something" situations. If you are a person who can read and learn from written material rather than a 'visual learner' (illiterate) and are interested in mentalism you might want to check out this ebook. Thanks to Peter Duffie for taking the time and putting together this collection because it is material that I don't think would have made it to guys like me any other way. I keep the pdf on my desk top and look at it often, I think you'll enjoy it. Well done. |
