The real point is in how you use the wand. Do you toss it around like a toy or handle it as though power resides in it?
The real power of a wand in theater is primarily that it provides a source for the magic, a cause for our effects. Misdirection and concealment are secondary purposes, and your show will lack unity if you just bring in a wand for one effect without explanation. Please consider these points also when using any magical artifacts, magic words, gestures, powders, potions, or what have you. What is your whole scenario of your magic? Are you using the Force as in Star Wars? Then the Jedi powers residing in you is the cause for your effects, and you should act accordingly. Is the world just a Matrix and you are able to bend that reality? Then let that be your unifying source of magic. Do you want people to think or know you are tremendously gifted at manipulations and sleight-of-hand? Or are you a Harry Potter type wizard? So I respectfully disagree with the advice to just "go nuts" (although I appreciate the enthusiasm and freedom of the attitude), and would instead suggest you continue to approach your performance thoughtfully, as you already are doing by asking for advice! Peace, alleycat

Wands?...I own half a dozen, enough said!
Actually, they can be beautiful works of art under the right craftsman. I like the ones made by Joe Porper and Thomas Wayne. Great for misdirection and with all the wizarding hype in the movies and in publication, hey, why not. |

The wand is, historically, made from wood. The wood was to have come from the tree of magic.
The movie "Willow" used a crooked branch/twig as a wand. Since that time I have used an oak branch that I debarked, sanded lightly and varnished. People comment more on the "wand" now and it gives me an interesting story to tell that people seem to enjoy. Magic is not only in the "tricks" we do. As for wand spinning, etc: Why would I treat something of such rarity as a toy (just my opinion for this type of wand). I made a nice "box" to hold my wand, I bring the box and all out to bring it into use and box it up to put it away. Bryan
Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.
