The largest thing I've ever seen vanished is Diamond Head, a volcano on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Is it just me? Or is it the larger the thing that is vanished, the less mysterious it seems to be. An Elephant or Car is ok but when you are talking real estate it seems a little ridiculous. Am I alone on this one? ...Matt.

The moon during the last black art demonstration known as a ssshhh "Lunar Eclipse"

Wait a "Solare Eclipse" eclipse a "Lunar Eclipse" so the answer is Solar Eclipse..

I think the Island is the largest thus far as was said earlier by Steven Steele.......

M. Ruetz,
Your point about the larger the item, the less impressive the effect, is one argument relative to the "too perfect" theory.

It is difficult to articulate, but the idea is that a vanishing car, while your audience has no explanation as to how it is done, is somehow more plausible than vanishing an entire mountain. For me, I guess the vanishing car leaves me wondering what happened to it...whereas, the vanishing mountain is reduced to nothing more than an optical illusion and therefore, loses much of its magic.

I know many will jump up to take the opposite view, however, I have talked to hundreds of lay people that have seen these effects over the years and they seem to corroborate what I have stated.

In fact, most of the people I have performed for think the most magical thing they have ever witnessed is a coin vanishing or card changing right before there eyes.

It doesn't matter. I mean we all know that David has supposedly "vanished" many large objects. Unless you have seen it in person, I feel there is some speculation of camera trickery.

Honestly, who cares? As Mr. Steele says, the average person in this world finds the basic tricks to be the amazing thing in the world.

No one still has any idea how my dad does the chicken vanish, even when videotaped for a TV show. Word had it the tech guys played it over and over and over again, only to fail to find out how it was done.

I made a big box of Church's Chicken vanish and no one was impressed Mai-Ling? J/k....

Seriously, I do agree that the size of the object vanished doesn't add to the amount of applause.

I suppose Adam Wolfe was only curious to know anyway and not stating an opinion.

A gigantic vanish with no motivation is little more than a puzzle.

If it can be reasonably framed by the magician in some kind of presentation that beats "I bet you can't guess where it is", then the theatrical suspension of disbelief will trump the too perfect theory, regardless of the object.

Oh - and if it's someone else's object - be sure it reappears Smile

Franz didn't actually vanish the mountain, he moved it.

I think the largest thing to vanish has been my sense of pride.
Thought: Why does man kill? He kills for food. And not only food: frequently there must be a beverage.

"When an effect is so remarkable that it is incredible, the illusion of magic is lost and only the puzzle remains."

Wilfred Johnson (1901-1974) "London Notes" column in the "Sphinx"

This is probably true of all illusions along these lines, the Statue of Liberty vanish included.

I made a box of chocolate, half a tub of ice-cream, and several beers disappear last night. My wife was not impressed! Smile

But I suppose that probably doesn't count. But seriously ...

I thought that the technique used in vanishing the Statue of Liberty was good, but as ReyHey said, everyone knows it didn't really vanish. And all that was left was figuring out the special effects!

James.

It became fried Chinese chicken after the show. Hehe.

Neah. Dad is known for that trick, and that he would NEVER eat these chickens. They aren't for the eaten.
