"...So why was a speech last week by Prof. Mojib Latif of Germany's Leibniz Institute not given more prominence? Latif is one of the leading climate modellers in the world. He is the recipient of several international climate-study prizes and a lead author for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He has contributed significantly to the IPCC's last two five-year reports that have stated unequivocally that man-made greenhouse emissions are causing the planet to warm dangerously. Yet last week in Geneva, at the UN's World Climate Conference--an annual gathering of the so-called "scientific consensus" on man-made climate change --Latif conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade and that we are likely entering "one or even two decades during which temperatures cool." The global warming theory has been based all along on the idea that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans would absorb much of the greenhouse warming caused by a rise in man-made carbon dioxide, then they would let off that heat and warm the atmosphere and the land. But as Latif pointed out, the Atlantic, and particularly the North Atlantic, has been cooling instead. And it looks set to continue a cooling phase for 10 to 20 more years....Latif says he expects warming to resume in 2020 or 2030." Oh...ok....I'll wait...oh, can I have my footprint back?

Was bound to happen! I really believe that this global warming/cooling has been the natural order of things for the last several million years. It's what the planet does.

Becuse there is no money in what Prof. Mojib Latif of Germany's Leibniz said.

LOL Lorne Gunter is probably the most misinformed right-wing columnists in Canada. He has claimed, for example, that fresh water is an environmental hazard. He denies evolution.
Lorne Gunter is incompetent. Now where does Latif stand? Here he is in Nature in May 2008: “Just to make things clear: we are not stating that anthropogenic climate change won’t be as bad as previously thought”, explains Prof. Mojib Latif from IFM-GEOMAR. “What we are saying is that on top of the warming trend there is a long-periodic oscillation that will probably lead to a to a lower temperature increase than we would expect from the current trend during the next years”, adds Latif. “That is like driving from the coast to a mountainous area and crossing some hills and valleys before you reach the top”, explains Dr. Johann Jungclaus from the MPI-M. “In some years trends of the two phenomena, the anthropogenic climate change and the natural decadal variation will add leading to a much stronger temperature rise.” Once again, Lorne Gunter shows his inability to distinguish a certain portion of his anatomy from a hole in the ground. Here is a [http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17742-worlds-climate-could-cool-first-warm-later.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=online-news]report[/url] on what Latif actually said on September 5. It's pretty much what is above: short term oscillations do not negate the long term trend of warming. John

Doug,
The reason it was not given more attention was that Latif was not 'conceding' anything or imparting any new information or dissenting from scientific opinion. The article you quoted pulls much of its information (without attribution btw) from a rather poor article by Fred Pearce that was in New Scientist. Latif was speaking at the Advancing climate prediction science session of the WCC3. His address concerned decadal predictions, and he was addressing the mistaken belief in much of the media that warming is monotonic. That is, that every year should get hotter and hotter. Discussing this, he said "It may well happen that you enter a decade, or maybe even two when the temperature cools relative to the present level and then I know what’s going to happen I will get- you know- millions of phone calls“Eh, what’s going on? So, is global warming disappearing?” “Have you lied on [sic] us?”” Somewhat amusingly, his was not a prediction about the next two decades, it was a scenario involving calls from the media who are unaware/misunderstand that warming is not monotonic and unaware of the importance of natural variability. You can listen to Latif's presentation here and his accompanying power point presentation here. Latif's presentation begins around 23:40 and the bit I quoted around 25:20. Funnily enough, a little before that statement he states that "We all believe that this long term warming trend is anthropogenic in nature.." The paras you quoted make the author of the seem quite reasonable. I believe the start of his article..."Imagine if Pope Benedict gave a speech saying the Catholic Church has had it wrong all these centuries; there is no reason priests shouldn't marry. That might generate the odd headline, no? Or if Don Cherry claimed suddenly to like European hockey players who wear visors and float around the ice, never bodychecking opponents....When a leading proponent for one point of view suddenly starts batting for the other side, it's usually newsworthy." gives a better idea of where he's coming from.

The Calgary Herald is actually my area's local newspaper. Don't confuse what Lorne Gunter (or most of what the Calgary Herald / National Post) writes with objective reporting. I wouldn't insult a bunny or a dove by lining its cage with that rag.
The media empire that owns these papers, CanWest, is now a penny stock (13 cents a share on the TSX). Tommy, I'm sure that Lorne Gunter's anti-GW rants bring in much needed dinaro in the form of advertising revenue from the local petrochemical industry (the largest industry by far in the region). Incidentally, the founder of The National Post (Conrad Black) is in U.S. prison for fraud and obstruction of justice, and for fleecing investors out of millions of dollars. True to the jailbird stereotype, he denies everything he has been found guilty of. The National Post still proudly prints the columns he sends in from jail. Yeah, yeah, yeah, someone will predictably accuse me of 'shooting the messenger'. But I believe you have the right to know as to whether or not the messenger is trustworthy or not.

No scientist has used the term "global warming" in all of my years in class and labs. We've always referred to it as climate change. Climate change is influenced by many factors. For example: We've known that solar flares are a contibutor for quite a while. So... this isn't really "breaking news" to me.

First what does the paper have to do with the fact of the statement by the mad scientist? Is it fact or not? Did he say it or not? Who cares WHO reported it. I don't care if it was Pee Wee Herman writing the news piece. (That's WHY is used the Calgary paper instead of other sources...knowing the reaction, I guess.)
Also I personally did not ask 'where was the rest of the media'. The article did. I don't give a crap about that either. I know how thew corrupt media works. I was part of it for many years. You follow the money, especially NOW since there are unaccounted for TRILLIONS being funneled. Note: All I did was bring it to your attention as an interesting 'thing'. My question is at the END of my post. Personally I don't give a flying bowl of noodles what these people say on either side...or think except as entertainment with my Frosted Mini Wheats...I'm going to be in a T-shirt or a flannel shirt reardless.

I have mentioned Don Cherry before!
John, the whole thing was based on a letter signed by PhD's in fields, for the most part, not involved with anything to do with the science of climate. Global Warming just happens to be your big thing so you cling to it. More power to you. It is rather sad to see someone sitting proudly upon a dead horse. |

Santa, it's not my big thing.
I'm one of those irritating fact checkers. I turns out that most of the facts I check at the Café deal with either evolution or climate science. Which says something about the postings at NOTS, I guess. I doubt that I have ever taken a stand on global warming other than "that report is false" or "that article misrepresents the science it claims to report" etc. John

Polar Bears swim long distance for a living...there are also more WILD Polar bears than ever...but other than Zoos, they are not all over the world.
Have you ever been around a Polar Bear? I have. Not exactly fragile or praying for sympathy. They are hardy survivors and used to climate changes over millenia. The only thing humans have done is introduce garbage dumpos for them to raid for a quick picnic... Besides what does that have to do with putting an article on Magic Café? I don't have a climate axe...couldn't care less (like I said). The temp chabnges here 10 to 15 degrees every day. So what. Now if you want to debate Wild Life and animal species being impacted by human greed and stupidity, I'm game. Bring it on.
