I've been searching about this topic... and I've come across many people suggesting to say "I don't do a trick twice", or "Once is entertainment, twice is lesson", or something on similar lines.
But this just seems so flat. It isn't witty, nor funny. Its like being hit in the face by the magician: "I'm the one doing magic here. Shut up and watch what I'm doing". That too when the person is in a state of disbelief. Is it just me? Or am I missing some point?

Hi Utkarsh Sinha,
The point is to say "I'm the one doing magic here. Shut up and watch what I'm doing" tactfully. Funny is a nice way to ease the tension of confrontation. Proactively handling the confrontation is good, "Watch closely I'm only doing this once." Then when confronted address it again with humor, "I did say I was only doing this once didn't I? I usually say that so no one misses the good stuff. Now watch this close cause I'm only going to be able do it once and even that's gonna be tricky." and follow with your next trick. Bookending can ease the sting of rejection and that's what it exactly is, rejection. Confidence and command of the audience from GO will cut back on the do it agains. Still gonna get them but less is better and command & confidence are always good.
You know why don't act naive.

How about this one?
Audience: "Hey, can you do that again?" Magician: "Sure, except this time instead of a deck of cards, I'll use a small length of rope." Then go on and do a totally different trick... or Audience: "Hey, can you do that again?" Magician: "Yes, I can. But instead, let me show you this..." Then go on and do a totally different trick...

Nice suggestion. However, since I only perform for free at my school for my co-workers and students, when they ask "Can you do it again?" My reply is always simple and effective: "Sure, but this time you will have to pay me."
Simple and effective hehehe..

With certain tricks, like a bill production, or when you end up with more coins than what you started with - you could joke "What do you think I am - made of money?"

I remembered many years back when I was performing in here in Singapore. Now I've really got nothing against us Singaporeans, but the audience was really a hard bunch of nuts to crack.
They will not show any interest even though the trick has stunned them. And worst of all, they are not spontaneous. You know after you do a wonderful move or after the trick has ended, you'll be expecting some sort of applause or thank you? Well, in Singapore, they'll just look blankly at you. Once, there's a guy that said, "show again la (la being an expression, worldly known as Singlish)" So I told him I can't. He said these exact words, "why? scared?" I just said yes and walked away. Always remember, when we perform, we are doing the audience a favour by putting in effort to entertain them, to bring happiness to them, to make their day. Don't ever let them ruin this nice intention of yours. Even if there ever is one 'difficult' person around, there will still be a lot more of them who really appreciates what you are doing for them.
