We are very pleased to announce a new blog written by the late Sid Lorraine. Sid was the hub of the wheel for a great deal of magic in the 20th century and yes, even though Sid passed away in 1989, he left - among other things - a handwritten manuscript, his memoirs, with more than enough material for a blog!

Magicana is pleased to parcel out his memoirs, along with supporting images and ephemera from his family, and from the David Ben collection as a weekly blog.
Enjoy.

Back in 1977 our city hosted the Western Regional I.B.M. convention. There were a number of draws. Elizabeth Warlock, The Bruff Brothers, Sid Lorraine and a few others which would not mean a lot to most. The convention was small by todays standards, with attendance of 150-200. Sid gave a wonderful lecture... but the public show, which was well attended, was stollen by Mr. Lorraine. He did his medicine pitch act. As I recall it didn't have a lot of magic, but it really didn't matter, because it was so entertaining anyway. I recall a VERY funny bit in his act which really suckered the audience. After speaking for a duration his voice started to go and people really started to feel sorry for his obvious discomfort. After time his voice got worse and worse, but then with a swig of his magic tonic his voice not only restored itself but came through extremely clear and extremely loud. You really had to witness this to appreciate Mr. Lorraine's comic genius.

At the time I was just a kid, but I won't forget Sid Lorraine.

Martin Breese, I believe, put out an audio tape interview with him. It is funny and fascinating. He was one of my favorites and a great guy. It was always fun talking to him and Bruce Posgate when they came up for magic week. Sid and Percy Abbott were best of friends and Sid did all of the illustrations for the first catalogs. He is remembered in our new book on Percy Abbott:Magical Years

Sid put out a great audio tape on how to write patter that I very much enjoyed along with his columns, illustrations and other creations, but I never got a chance to see him do his medicine show or any of his other live performances. Is there any video on Sid?

There's a lot of material; pictures, audio and video. It will become available over time as some of it is quite difficult to digitize.

Follow along with his blog here:

His recollections are nearly up to the 1920s where he starts making lots of interesting connections in the magic world.

I met Sid at the IBM convention in 1975. That was the last time I saw him, though. He was a fascinating guy. He said some interesting things about the "toys" we use.

He used to tell the story about passing through customs once, when a customs inspector looked through one of his bags. He saw a number of brass items, presumably from Brema, etc., and thought that Sid was in the hardware business.
