Hey guys,
I am looking for a stage prop. I want to be able to take a knife, and make it apear as though I am sharpening it on a grinder. Loud metal and grinding noises as red sparks shower down, without actually sharpening or damaging the knife. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

There is a cheap Hand Flasher (Funken Ring) which can be found in a search engine.
There is also the electric Makin Sparks <See Picture- It's called Makin' Sparks by Sylvester the Jester. Here is a You Tube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sscONPRaX9c See the $120 price tag of it at: http://www.kjmagic.com/catalog/effects03.html I don't know if it's still available. I had one and it was stolen from me at one of my magic shows at a Magic club.

Bernie, that looks like a great piece! It just depends on the "scale" of what you need.
My stage size "industrial" solution was a mounted metal grinding wheel (like an angle grinder) with a small piece of metal bar (rebar or other expendable stock) on a hinged holder that you can just press against the wheel while it is spinning. You can control the pressure and thus the sparks created. Now keep in mind that this is potentially a VERY dangerous solution but I've used metal grinders for years and was very comfortable with their use so it was a very practical method for me. If you're very comfortable with power tools, it can create a huge shower of sparks with a small piece of expendable steel stock. Make SURE you have shielded the sparks from anywhere near your face as hot metal fillings in your eyes are not entertaining in the least. Be careful!

Ahh the comedy sparkler looks great, if only there were more sparks! I will probably go with this for now, but your idea sounds great Mr. Pierce, I may try that one day. Thanks for the suggestions, if anyone else has any ideas please let me know!

Hey Gang,
Dan is selling his "Makin' Sparks" on his own website, under Merch: http://sylvesterthejester.com/ I'm going to post about his DVD elsewhere in another thread I bumped into. Cheers, AtPG

The FunkenRings are usually cheap knock offs... however, the ORIGINAL German one that is top quality and design is now available again.
We carry it, as should most other dealers (if they know a good item when they see it)

You could try flash paper with a sparkle additive such as used for hand held spark ejectors:
http://themagicwarehouse.com/FX2843/Spark-Ejectors.html You could possibly attach the paper filled with the additive in three places behind the grinding wheel and touch the knife "three times" to make it look like a quick sharpening each time. |

I just created a YouTube video on how to fix your flasher funken ring. This is my first truly edited video, but it has a lot of good information. To watch and hear click on the below and you may have to turn your volume up.
