Did they help each other, or did they sit in front of a mirror for hours? |

They just had a tremendous amount of experience under all kinds of conditions. Fred practiced, practiced, practiced.

Thanks, Pete. I can understand what you mean with the amount of experience under all kinds of conditions.
I remember seeing Ken Brooke on YouTube and seeing how graceful he was and now seeing Fred Kaps being just as graceful. A beautiful thing to see! Keep in mind that I lived in the Deaf Community in Washington DC for 16 years, and you will notice that many Deaf people are extremely graceful with their hands. So, when I see the average C&Ber making certain mistakes, it makes me want to SCREAM. Right now I got the itch to practice, and I wonder where that came from? Have fun folks, Keith |

Sometimes I wonder if the graceful movements of the hands of certain magicians might be transmitting strange words in sign language.

Beautiful routine. Many thanks for sharing the video. A classic performed by a master.

Bill may not be entirely joking. Before the 13th Century in Europe, Choral music was directed by "numes" with one hand indicting what note would come next and the other the intensity or hold. The director would often disguise these directions in order to make it seem as if the chorus had memorized the new piece. No one knew why his hands seemed to flutter like birds in the air.

That's got to be about the nicest routine of cups and balls I've seen. Or, at least in my top three or four. Makes me wonder why more people aren't doing it with sponges over the hard working balls. There's a lot of stuff there that works really well with the sponges, things that simply couldn't be done with the style of ball we traditionally work with. Also, I would point out that the balls did not really 'come across' as sponge. They were just balls. As magicians we recognized them as sponges, but I wonder how obvious this would appear to a lay audience? And if they realized they were sponge, just how important it really is?
One last point. There is a certain psychology with Mr. Kaps' final production loads that was either intentional or unintentional; the revelation of four very solid objects at the end, three lemons and an apple. I really think this helps to make an audience forget about how solid the balls were prior to their revelation. Thanks, Pete, for digging this old video up. |

You are welcome. One should study the Johnny Paul routine. That's why I produced the special cups for the Paul handling. Stevens has the DVD and, believe me, it'll fool you. And, it's not that difficult. (Still have a few sets of the cups left.)

I just came across this thread and all that I can say is WOW! I am equally amazed and in awe of the handling by Kaps as all of the other posters have been. It has inspired me to pick up my Johnny Paul cups again and review this routine, as well as search for a copy of Anthony Brahams' publication. Thanks for putting this up, Pete. A real treasure.

Pete, thank you so much for this video! Scott Jenkins, thank you for posting the link.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

YouTube sent me this message:
Your video, Fred Kaps Cups and Balls ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JpFZbE-UhM ) , may include content that is owned or licensed by these content owners: * Content owner: UMG Type: Audio content Obviously, they don't want anyone using "Misty". It amazes me that they troll through YouTube looking for a nickel they can squeeze out of people. Before I tell them to lick me where I'm fuzzy, make sure you watch the video while you can. If they make me take it down, I'll put it up without the music. But people, whatever you do, don't rip it from YouTube with any of the easily available ripping software packages and put it on bit torrent. That would be wrong. Sure, it would make Fred Kaps' beautiful work freely available forever, but it would deny UMG any of the cash they so richly deserve. (And if you think any royalties will make their way to the songwriter, the musicians or their heirs, you've got another think coming.) We must protect their interests over the interests of the magic community or the memory of Fred Kaps. So, don't rip it and bit torrent it. It's wrong. Scott

Many magicians do nothing more than a series of moves in their routines, reducing it to a puzzle. Kaps made the Cups And Balls magical.

If you think that royalties never reach the composer or the heirs, you are mistaken. All of my father's work is licensed under ASCAP. I don't make a lot of money from mechanical/broadcast rights from his compositions, but I get a statement every month from ASCAP. The best I can hope for is that some show in Europe or Japan will use a piece of his material as a theme song. Then, the money really pours in. If you consider how quickly magicians jump on people who knock off material that is not protected by copyright or patent, consider that an estimated 50% of the royalties that owners of copyrighted material are taken by people who do not pay for its use.

Thanks, Bill. Because of Pete's and your advice, I will happily take the music off and keep the video up. No need to dilute the value of what is really a very beautiful song, especially if its public playing still benefits the artists and their families.
P.S. The record companies still suck!
