This is full of excellent working material. Watching the performance I kind of guessed how the sweet jar routine might work but as for the rest of it there was so much mis-direction in the routines themselves that the fairly simple methods were completely obscured. Obviously a lot of thought has gone into the structure of each routine, the scripting and directing the participants.

Most of the props can be easily made at home apart from something you need for the 'Casino Royale' type effect which ideally you would get by buying the original Becker effect (which could set you back a tidy sum), unless you can source the necessary prop on its own somewhere?

OK... so here's my full review of Paul's brand new DVD set "Connected"

I received it just in time for my Birthday and it couldn't have been a better present!

Apart from one effect, I didn't see anything new in method but that really doesn't matter, that wasn't the reason I purchased the set. I wanted to see how a full-time regular worker structured his performance and routines and this is where I learned a hell of a lot!

Worth the price to me was the bonus interview at the end of the DVD and Paul's thoughts on scripting and show structure were absolutely on the nail.

Regarding effects, I did know the methodology for quite a lot of them but, as I said, it is Paul's structure and performance skills that were a valuable lesson to me and the fact that, like myself, Paul believes in simplicity of method which allows you to concentrate on the presentation.

I have to admit though that I was grinning like a an idiot as to how My Luckiest Day was accomplished. Sheer genius! This is definitely a principle I will use. It is sooo clean!

This is a DVD set that I will watch over and over again so that I get to see all the subtleties at work.

I don't particularly want to do a carbon copy of this act. It would be wrong to do so but I have to say that I would use every single one of these effects at some time of other if it fits in within my own show (and a couple do). There is not a weak one amongst them for a regular stage worker. I do feel that I have to point out that all these routines are primarily meant for stage work.

OK...so here's a breakdown of each of the effects:-

PICK A CHAIR - A really nice and fast-paced chair routine using four spectators, four chairs, four envelopes and four pieces of coloured card.

I sort of guessed the methodology for this one but surprisingly enough, couldn't catch Paul doing the dirty. Again, as in all the routines, it is Paul's misdirection, routining and show structure which is the valuable lesson.

HANDS OFF BANK NIGHT - This is one of those things that I was working on prior to getting this DVD set but was never really happy with the elimination process at the end. Watching Paul at work here has changed all that and this is going back into my act at the very next gig this weekend! The basic effect of this is probably known by most reading this but for completion - a bill is borrowed from a spectator and placed into one of five envelopes. Envelopes are mixed and eliminated and yet the final envelope contains the spectators borrowed, signed bill.

THE PENDANT CURSE - As the blurb says, this is a beautifully scripted tale of four women, a murder and a sinister curse. Nothing new in methodology and yes, the routine is similar in style to a well known marketed item. However, again, it is Pauls's subtleties, language and storytelling which lifts this routine up to a different level.

BACK TO BECKER - This is an extension of Larry Becker's Casino Royale and, for me, this was the weakest routine on the set. It may just be personal preference as I don't like the methodology in it's most basic form, and that was what was used here. However, it is "horses for courses" and some may really like this.

THE SWEET JAR - This is a beautiful piece of theatre and something that I can see myself using in the future. I was aware of the methodology as I had read this somewhere before but Paul adds another dimension at the end of this routine which takes it into another level. Great storytelling, great staging, great subtleties and a routine which is not only strong but really tugs on the heart string as well.

MY LUCKIEST DAY - As I said earlier in this review, when I saw the secret to this, I was grinning like an idiot. This is basically a confabulation routine where a date and a time mentioned by random spectators throughout the show are found taped to the bottom of a tray which has been in full view throughout the show and has had a lit candle on it burning throughout. The methodology on this is pure genius and is so squeaky clean. I will definitely be re-working this one for my act.

For the sake of completeness:-

PSYCLOCK- This one isn't explained on the DVD but after speaking to Paul, it is earmarked as a possible future release from Alakazam. Strong and powerful, let's hope that Peter Nardi takes this up. He will certainly have at least one potential customer on his hands Smile

So, to sum up, this is a wonderful set of DVD's and one that I am really pleased that Paul has released.

If close-up or walkaround is your forte, then this set may not be for you. However, I struggle to find a reason why any stage or platform worker will not find anything to learn from this set.

This is an excellent dvd

I notice though that the Café vultures are selective about who they pull apart for using existing material. Others are eaten alive for using ideas that exist, even when it is primarily about the performance.

What I like about this dvd is that it IS about the performance. The routines may be similar or the same as existing material but Paul shows it all as 'he' performs it and that makes it worth the money.

It is good to see DVD's that show magic rather than just tricks

First of all, I woudnt even like to write this because this will disagree with the review above and it will propably just start the flaming wars, where the producer, performer and their friends start to protect the set. However, I do feel that Café needs to have more honest opinions instead of just platant hidden advertising where people are scratching their friends backs and hyping every darn product that hits the magic market these days.

That said, I just got this set and had a chance to see the performance show last night and I cant say that I am impressed... For me, most of the effect highlighted all the things what I hate about mentalism.

First of all, who ever says that the chair routine is straight to the point?!?!? HOW much more complicated the routine could get? Sit down, have numbers, switch places, switch numbers... There was so much going on I was lost on the effect after the first 3minutes and it keeps going and going... doh...

Bank Nite highlighting how spectators keep losing with Pateo force that I don't think is deceptive.... Much better versions out there in my mind.

Variation on Larry Becker routine had potential, but the methodology is horrible in my mind. In right hands and with total restructure, this however could be a winner. The premise is great.

the pendant curse was huge and long build up to such a minor effect. After all, it was just 1 out of 4 prediction. Reminded me A LOT of Andy Nymans marketed effect and using pendant with engraving just made at least me wonder, how many people started to think "what picture would have been inside of the pendant"... *cough* other out perhaps *cough*. don't know, havent watched explanation yet but that's what I believe at least some spectators would be thinking.

The sweet jar fooled me methodologically but the effect just didn't connect otherwise. All the storytelling was way out of place when compared to rest of the show. There just wasnt clear pure "red threat" in the show so to speak.

Also the ending was just lol... Are we supposed to believe in the story around this? The methodology is quite clever for what it seems to be, but again, this one needs totally different routine or context to be effective.

As I said, I have just watched thru the performance and not the explanations so there might be some good thinking behind the routines, but most of it doesn't show on the show part Smile

This DVD is FANTASTIC !

I have been a working professional for 25 years and the material on this DVD are some of the best stage routines I have seen on DVD.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion, but all I can say about the guy above is that he really doesn't know what he is talking about.

The DVD show cases mentalism as an art form of entertainment, and not just a selection of trick.
It seems that Korttihai_82 has allot to learn, and there is more to performing than just a view tricks. You could learn allot from tis DVD.

The story lines and the scripting are first class and some will be making there way onto my latest show. The cruise audience will love this stuff, and I cant wait to perform it to them.

O.K the DVD is not full of new methods I agree, Having said that “My Luckiest Day “ tray routine is something very new and worth its weight in gold for any stage worker.

Like someone else said above, if a stage worker cant find anything here he could use in his act then he cant be a real worker.

If you are a traditional magician looking for some tricks to show his Mum or down the pup then this is probably not for you. However if you are an experienced stage or parlor worker you will have lots of fun with this DVD.

Well done Alakazam you have another winner on your hands.
I for one will be looking out for Paul Stockman’s next release.

Just to set the record straight J-M. I am not a personal friend of Paul's and certainly did not contribute to the DVD's production in any way.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion and, of course, my review was just my opinion.

However, I can state that I am a regular worker and I found lots on the DVD set to keep me thinking and improving my act.

I think where you learn most on this DVD is by watching a fellow professional worker handling an audience and watching how he structures his routines. Not all of the effects would work in every situation. However, Paul does state this in the explanation section.

Of course, all this is just my opinion. However, I still believe that every regular stage worker out there will learn something from Paul's set.

Just watched the DVDs. Great!!! The stand out ideas are the chair routine and that amazing idea for the Confabulation ending.

BUT that's not what makes this a great DVD. It's watching a pro break down, in extreme detail, his routines. He tells you how it can go wrong and even brings up times it went wrong for him.

It's all the details about each of the effects that makes this a DVD worthing having and viewing several times.

Great job, Paul!!!

I just watched the preformance segment. It felt like watching an Office Depot fire sale. I think the 3 main problems of Paul's show were the choice of material (way way to much predictions, lot's of envalopes and writing which make it feel all the same, not to say boring). The second main proeblem which is the more critical is that Paul (ironically) is NOT CONNECTED to his audience, and you could feel the audience isn't really excited about the show; no bursts of loughes and no WOW moments; what I call Larry Becker moments. The third problem is there is nothing really fresh or groundbreaking about the material presented, but this is not really important (for me anyway) as long as you can learn something from the presentation, which in this case you can very little.
I do want to say that I appreciate Paul's courage to release his complete show. I think this DVD worth the buy for that reason only.

I think Nimrod that you should look at each section of the show. Remember this is an instructional DVD not a full show. I myself have recorded a couple of these lecture DVD's and its a very false environment. Usually an invited audience that includes many magicians.
You sound as if you are mostly a magician and not a full performing mentalist.
The material on this DVD as Greg said is pure gold and many of the worlds leading professionals are using some of Paul's material already.
I have never met Paul but I have seen him perform a professional show and he is an amazing showman, with laughs and amazement being created by many of the routines in this DVD.
So I suggest before you make these types of comments you go make your own DVD and perhaps learn the art of performance and not just tricks.

Usually before I buy anything I check out the Café for reviews but in this instance I didn't, judging by the comments here I have made a good buy. Now just got to find some time to watch.

I perform 3-5 times a week for an audience of 100-1000 people regularly (you name a company and 99% I've performed for it's employees or clients). On my shows I do mentalism and mentalism only (It's been years since my last ambitious card). I lecture on persuasion techniques at least once or twice a week, again for companies employees or clients. I MC companies events at least once a month, many times much more.
I have my own TV show on national TV on prime time (so far I created 45 episodes and specials) and I consult for TV production companies all around the globe (my show was sold to 8 countries so far). You can watch segments of it here: http://www.buzztv.co.il/prod_e.php?id=tv......4&wVid=0

or on my website: http://www.nimrodharel.co.il

I'm sorry to disappoint you, I guess you can say I'm a working mentalist. I know it's hard to be criticized, but this is what I think about those DVDs, and lets not forget it's only one man opinion.

Nimrod

p.s. and lets not forget also that I recommended buying those DVDs for the sake of watching a complete mentalism performance. I do however think you could get much benefit from not ignoring my remarks. Unlike how you were trying to present me believe me I do know what I'm talking about.

He does come across well, I like all that he said. You questioned his skill and performance; he simply gave evidence that you are wrong. No singing from what I see.

Take one thousand people and each would have their own opinion. I do respect that of others and only wish the same in return.

The Café has many opinions some good some bad but everyone has the right to that.
I just believe that sometimes people who give are not so keen to receive.

But this is a fact of life I suppose.
