Just a reminder to all involved in Gospel Ministry. Come 2010 we will be celebrating 100 years of the first Gospel Ministry work ever known to be published, Seeing Truth: Object Lessons with Magical and Mechanical Effectsby Rev. C. H. Woolston.
I e-mailed the FCM about this hoping that in 2010 at the annual convention we might celebrate and honor this important historical ministry in some way. But even if that doesn't happen, we should all honor and remember those who have preceded us in this ministry and especially lift up Rev. Woolston for being such a trailblazer in this particular ministry we now practice in honor of our Lord. Peace and blessings, Mike

Mike, I just wanted to add that I have one of the "Original" Seeing Truth Books and it is Pristine Condition. This is a book that I will always cherish and keep in my collectibles.

I have a copy as well, an original copy. My copy shows its age, but still readable.
Still some great timeless routines that just have to be somewhat updated for language and culture.

Any known efforts to make a Centennial edition?

Excellent question - it would be a great thing to do if possible.

As long as I've been doing gospel magic (probably 40 years or so-beginning as a youngster), I didn't know about Rev. C. H. Woolston's book. Thanks for sharing the reminder! We owe a debt to the "pioneers," don't we? |

Found a review of the book from 1911 from Google Books:
- Seeing Truth. By Rev. C.H. Woolston, D.D. This is a book of object lessons with magical and mechanical effects. The idea of the author is good and undoubtedly he has made a success of these means with children, but the book is too magical and too mechanical for the ordinary pastor's use. The ordinary pastor is not a magician. Thanks for sharing that review. As I read it I have to admit I thought it was a bit technical for the average pastor. But I have come to the conclusion it wasn't for non-performing pastors, but for folks eager to duplicate what he was doing. The book was quite successful and he put out other books as well...but none as focused on gospel magic as this one. ><> J

In addition, several of his other books concentrated more upon the "object lessons" than actual magic.
