I got a great deal from a Café member on a set of cups recently, I actually only bought them because they came with a great wand... The wand was made by Eric Hansen, and I have a few pieces of Eric's so I knew it was going to be nice.
The wand has become a firm favourite when I am working with my Sisti cups or Paul Fox's. It's a very elegant wand with a Holly Wood shaft and Ziricote tips. After mailing Eric a while back, I found out that he goes to an incredible amount of trouble selecting the right woods for each cup, vase or wand. Literally, by land on snow mobile / snow shoes, boat, and air. (Eric works as a firefighter.) I was also amazed at the new price of these wands at $45! So, I wanted to give a shout out to Eric and his work because it's clear he does it for the love and passion of it, and I have never spoken to anyone who didn't like Eric's work. There are a few pics of the wand posted here for anyone interested: http://www.cupsandballsmagic.com/Eric-Ha......and.html Bri |

Beautiful! I have a friend whose dad makes wooden pens. I've thought about
asking him to make me a wand. I love all the varieties of wood these guys can get their hands on.

The problem with pen blanks is that they are quite short, compared to what we need for wands. Also, many of the lathes they use for pens will not handle a long piece of doweling or hardwood.
However, there are some wonderful hardwoods available at Woodcraft, Rockler and Constantine's. There are three sources of excellent materials.

As a woodturner, I can assure you that pens and wands are 2 very different animals! Pens are usually free form, and wands are usually done with a jig, live tooling or CNC to insure consistent diameter!
I have turned wands free style using mics and calipers and would have to charge a fortune just to break even! MMc |

One of the best ways I know to get a wand out of a square blank is to use a metal working lathe with a screw carriage. I have an attachment for my wood lathe that allows that to happen. I still prefer to work with a dowel!
