IT DIDN'T WORK!!!!!!!
LOL, I only gave the woman 5 cards! She thought of 49 and I said 33. I kept asking her to look again etc. Later she sent someone to get me in the middle of strolling and told me the significance of 33, the age of her son. I later brought her on stage and replayed the experience before I did a double tap and read her mind again.

Yay to Brad Henderson for his review in Magic Magazine and letting everyone know that this is not original and was put out by our friend a long time ago and not given any credit.

Randi,
Because I don't get Magic magazine, would you mind elaborating on that? Thanks!

Even though I don't know either man personally, based on aquantances that do know them, and being familiar with the writings of each over the years - I think Bob Farmer and Brad Henderson are two of the most knowledgeable, well-respected, and ethical men in our field.

Let us please not drag every thread into side arguments.
I really like Sanders effects, they are great. I hope to get this one soon, and I would have liked to have learned about the effect but 23 pages is just too much! Looks like he is coming around our neck of the woods in November, so maybe he'll have one then. |

Brad, who has posted on this thread, was brazen enough to call them out in a review of this product in Magic Magazine, and I commend him for it. The reason I bring it up here is three fold... One to say, good job Brad! Two, to support my friend who's trick this really is. And three, because if this was something that was put out by a young new comer to magic manufacturing you people would rip them a new one. But since it's these guys, all of the sudden putting out other peoples idea and not giving credit is just fine. So my third reason is to expose the double standard and hypocrisy that is The Magic Café. So there... AND... GO! Randi |

Now, why not say who your friend is that created this effect? If he deserves credit, let's give it to him.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not really plugged into what's going on in the magic world, so it should be no surprise to know that I'd never heard of "Review King" until recently. I just noticed that he has an astounding 13,702 posts to his credit, so his knowledge must indeed be vast. Should I assume that somewhere there is a "Review Queen," or maybe a "Review Court Jester" or perhaps a "Review Prince" or is "Review King" the whole salami. Please advise if the royal line grows and of any and all ascensions to these various thrones so I can keep current.

I have been performing this effects quite regularly since just after the first of the year. I have done it at corporate strolling gigs, in restaurants, Casino Nights Parties, in stage shows, and even just among friends. I have even begun to use it as a closer in my stand-up/parlor shows. (I'm leaving all of the other arguments alone concerning who gets the credit, etc.)
I have, however, run into one major snag. When presenting a stage version of this, good management of volunteers is absolutely of utmost importance. I realize that this goes for everything we do, but especially here. On at least three different occasions I have selected people who I thought to be fairly sharp-minded, and made my instructions simple and clear as to what to do--only to have them absolutely RUIN the climax because they failed to read the cards correctly, find their number, etc. In a close-up setting, it is fairly easy to redeem yourself. In a stage/platform setting, you are dead in the water. It is easy for a person determined to sabotage your act to do so. It is also easy for a person who is a bit nervous to sabotage it as well. When I first started implementing the effect in my shows, it seemed like a slam-dunk closer that "packs small/plays big." However it seems to have been turned into a bit more like a "hail mary" in the last seconds of the fourth quarter, so-to-speak. I have had highly-intelligent, respectable people botch this whole thing up, only to look at me as if I was presenting something weak. As a professional I have played it off fairly well, but it is one of those effects that is totally lost if the "wow factor" is weakened at all, regardless of whose fault it is. I'm beginning to re-evalute using this as a closer. A back-up closer is always waiting in the wings...

I always have the person recheck the loser cards. This seems to solve a potential problem.

You're right, Sleightofhander, that is one way of doing it. I tell them not to mention their card out loud, check the loser cards, and try again. It usually redeems me somewhat, but still lacks the punch of just hitting the number dead on with the first attempt.
In the last stage show I presented it, ALL THREE people failed to read their cards correctly! I was absolutely stunned. Not only that, after I had one of the people try again, she STILL read the cards wrong and when she stated what her number was, I pointed out immediately that she had missed the number again (diplomatically, of course). She apologized, but by then the audience had given up. I don't remember when I've had a show close on such a sour note, apart from a sub-trunk fiasco some twenty years ago. I am a big fan of this effect, nevertheless. However I am giving some hard thought on how I'm going to present it from now on; in a stand-up or stage show anyway. The final straw was at a corporate event a little over a week ago when a guy from Great Britian botched up the whole thing, and then told me in front of others that I needed to work on that trick some more, as if I was some sort of amateur. I looked at him for a few moments and he knew what I was thinking. He then admitted that he had screwed up the trick, and I went ahead and performed it for his friends who hadn't seen it and they were fried. At least he got to see the power of the effect when everything goes as planned. I'm only mentioning this scenario because it has happened a handful of times recently and has made me a little gun-shy. Somehow the spectators blame you for a poor effect, even when the volunteers are known to have screwed things up. I am usually more of a comedy magician, but I present this as a fairly serious and interesting demonstration. Perhaps I need to keep it humorous. Of course, I'm always open to suggestions.
