It's been awhile since I've posted here. I'm not completely sure if this is the place to post this, but I think it may fit best here. Anyway, I posted this about a month ago at the Penguin forums, and I would like to ask the magicians here for this request as well.
Over the last couple of years, I've been working on creating a guide for magicians who are looking to start a career in magic. Awhile back, I posted some essays on the same topic, and was met a lot of positive feedback, as well as some negative feedback, primarily about my age and supposed lack of experience. This negative feedback somewhat got to me, mainly because it was primarily just personal attacks upon myself and I became sick of having to defend myself. So regretfully, I stopped posting my essays. I say regretfully because I was told by many that they did find them helpful. During this time though, I've continued writing this guide. At this point in it's creation though, I would like to ask if any professionals would like to help contribute to this work. Basically, what I'm asking for is just for professionals to give some advice, or even just relate some stories, about how to start a career in magic. Now, I've been asking a variety of magicians for contributions to this work simply because I know I don't contain all of the information, and my goal is to create a source that really can help. More so though, I started this work with the intention of creating the guide that I would have wanted when I first started out pursuing a career in magic. Initially, these articles will be posted online. I'm in the process right now of revamping my website (recently I switched hosting sites, and have to redo my website), and I will be making a section of it just for magicians (this is not a way for me to make extra money. Actually, there will be nothing for sale at all on my site accept my actual shows that I do). I just want to get this information out to those who want it. One thing that I do want to mention though is that once this work is completed, it will be turned into an Ebook and distributed freely. I'm not looking to make any money off of this work. That was never my intention. Instead, I want to distribute this work to the magic community so that those who are looking to start their career have an easy source to look to. That was something I didn't have, and I know it would have made things a lot easier on me if I had. Now, the subjects that are being covered in this work are everything from creating a show, to getting that show booked. When I first set out to create this guide, I wanted it to cover everything possible dealing with becoming a professional. Please, before anyone comments though, if you don't like this idea, please refrain from posting. However, if you would be willing to help contribute to this work, please do comment. Also, I know there may be some questions, and please ask. Just please, if you want to bash this idea, please don't respond. Also, I'm aware that sometimes it takes multiple sources to learn everything. I know that what I'm creating could never completely cover everything that there is, and because of that, I will also be suggesting follow up material. But I do want to get enough information out there that a beginner has a single place to go and find the information easily. Thank you, Dustin White |

If I were you, I would personally contact different people, I do not think this is the right place to get what you want.

Dustin,
Please don't read anything into my questions, just take them at face value. I'm asking only because I am not familiar with your name and so know absolutely nothing about you or your background. Are you aware of any of the books that have already been written on this subject? Why do you think another such book is needed? What is it about your experience or background that qualifies you to write such a book? Just curious.

I know there are quite a few books and courses out on this subject. I have a couple of sources myself, but I didn't get those until after I started performing and started making money, simply because of the price (after spending so much just to make a magic act, I didn't have much left to buy additional sources).
Now, it's not that I think another book is needed. There are some wonderful guides out there already. One of the first that I got was Paul Daniels course and I find myself going back to that a lot. However, the price is not very friendly for a beginner. Especially after having spent so much on the magic itself. That's why I want to release a book for free. However, I do not pretend that this book will make every other source on the subject obsolete. Quite the contrary. I want this book to be a way that beginning magicians can find the information for free, so they can start becoming a professional, and then from there, have the money to invest into these other courses. The other courses are wonderful as well, and I would highly recommend them. But for someone just beginning, or even isn't completely sure that this is what they want to do, spending the money on a course, or other material isn't always logical. Now, as for my experience. I've been performing professionally since I was 16. As in professionally I mean for money, as my only source of income. From the age of 18, it was what supported me. However, right now I'm just 21. So it's been a little over 5 years of experience. I'm aware that is not much. That is one of the big reasons I'm asking other people to help with this project as well. I know I don't know everything. But I have studied many different sources, and have taken a few classes in marketing and business. And I know what works for me. Again though, I only have a little over 5 years of experience. I've been quite successful with how I run my business, but I also know there is a lot that I'm missing out. Which is why I'm asking many other magicians to help and contribute a few articles. It is also why I'm going to begin this project by putting it in a website format first. |
