No cup is perfect. So...
What is it about a set of cups that isn't quite right. What is it about a set of cups that appeals to you functionally. Because everyone does different routines, a feature of a cup that is a negative for one person might be a positive for another person or a non-factor completely. You can have a list of positives and a list of negatives. This is all about functionality. Not the look/beauty of the cup. Spew forth. I will start. THINGS I WISH WERE DIFFERENT Cellini Cups: Not big enough to hold ALL baseballs. Babe/Animal/Gazzo Cups: Saddle is kinda flat so it's difficult to tip it back with a wand. Johnson Cups: Small final loads. Phoenix: Stick together, wobble, tiny attic requires small balls for some routines. Andy Comic: Very thin walled makes them prone to denting and sticking together. Saddle is too deep and small. They create an air-lock. Riser Mini: A little too short for my taste making them harder for me to grasp. Paul Fox: Perhaps a little light weight. Sherwoods: So nice you don't want to use them. THINGS I LIKE Cellini Cups: I Love the tapered cup fits my hand. Tips back easily with wand. Babe/Animal/Gazzo Cups: Sturdy. Animal/Gazzo takes a baseball. Johnson Cups: Ring like a bell. Nice weight. Great saddle. Phoenix: Extreme Durability. They have personality. Andy Comic: You can more easily fix a dent due to the thin walls. Riser Mini: Durable, short/compact stack for strolling. Paul Fox: Light weight, great shape for loads. Sherwoods: Durable, nice weight, functional saddle shape, takes a tennis ball.

There is a very large range of weights in Paul Fox cups. I have cups that were produced by Danny Dew that weigh almost 5 ounces, and some that weigh less than half that. In that size, a five ounce cup is fairly heavy.
My workers are Sherwood copper cups.

Very true. I didn't know they had that wide a range.

I don't think there's anything wrong with any cups, you just need to figure out the best way to use them.

I was just sitting here, thinking that of the cups I've bought, I can't really have any complaints about them. I don't have an extensive collection, but I've a couple of nice sets. My first two sets were aluminium and looking back, they were a little on the light side. Some moves work better with some cups than they do with others, but other than that, I can't really fault the cups I've chosen.

I know one fellow who feels that if you can't do the elevator move with a set of cups, it is useless. He has no idea how nice it is to be able to perform the cups and balls with a set of ordinary plastic or paper cups.

I kind of understand that, I prefer not to use cups that I cannot steal from the saddle or do the elevator move with, though that is for my own routine.
When performing impromptu I do a variation of that routine so any cups will do, I actually thought I came up with a great idea in a Café the other day with coffee creamers and balled up lids until someone told me that Jay Sankey had already done that years ago. I used to wish the Stanley cups had more attic space but my Foxy 2.5's are as close as you can get to "that" cup. The only other cup I would have liked to have been different were my Copper and Brass smooth sherwoods. The inherant problem with those is that they are not silver... or engraved... |

I can find some good in most Cups, however Cups made of aluminum are not my favorite due to their weight (though I love the ones I have just the same). With Chop Cups 2 of my favorite aluminum Cups are a Tim Star Cup and an old Tannen’s Chop Cup with a rabbit hallmarked into it.
I can appreciate Cups just for their shape artistically and the history behind them. Bruce |

Because of that , you might not want to do the Charlie miller move 3 times with all the cups stacked. If your routine does not require the cups to ever be stacked it wouldn't matter at all. Cellini cups won't hold 3 on top. If your routine requires that, you can't use those cups.

There is a set of cups on the market that are highly underrated. These are made by Blackman of Italy. They are called "The Golden Goblets." They look like a Paul Fox cup, but when you invert the cups on the table, the top of what is at that point the upper shoulder bead is flatter than on a normal Paul Fox cup. This gives these cups quite a bit of stability. They are a bit lighter than a regular Paul Fox cup.

My phoenix cups don't stick.
I have set #9 though. Cup sets are a lot like shoes...you gotta try before you buy to see if they will work for you. Some people buy cups site unseen and then get disappointed when the cups can't do what they want right out the box. Weight, size and your hand size all factor into the equation. I have not found a set I couldn't use. They are all different though and require practice to find what you can do with them. Those cups sound interesting Bill. Is there a website for them or can we see them on your site? Mobius |

Bill is dead right about the Blackman of Italy cups. I find myself reaching for them a great deal when I just want to practice a few moves. These are excellent workers. In design and feel, they are very similar to the Paul Fox cups but with some distinctive features, especially the "sawtooth" beading around the mid-section. Relatively inexpensive too.

There are two sets of them in the Museum. One was donated by Paul Gross of Hocus Pocus Magic. The other was Gene DeVoe's set.
