Does anyone know if/where his handling for Oil and Water is documented? I love the effect and I'd like to learn his one-handed technique.

Also, check his book Magic of the Soul. There are a few well know versions he performs, which one are you refering to?

Slow Motion Magic is another book to check of Rene Levand's work.

I learned 3 of the 7 phases in the book and it's one of my favorites to perform in casual settings for friends. Don't really do it in the real world though.

I am honoured to be interviewing Rene Lavand on stage at the upcoming International Magic Convention in London in November.

Matt give the man a respectable handshake for me! Rene is one of my favorites, I think its because he reminds me of my dad.
I believe his Oil and Water is on one of his DvDs but I don't know of a book.

Motown: The handling I am thinking of involves him showing the top card on the stack by peeling it back slightly and then placing it on the table. The current handling I have for oil and water is two handed and uses the bottom card from the stack.

His book: The Mysteries of My Life outlines the entire routine as well as many others.....seriously worth purchasing.

Absolutly beautiful effect. However, I do have to admit that I now use Helder Guimaraes' version in "Small Miracles". Not that it's better than Rene's, I just love Helder's handling.

René taught me his routine in person, in '07. Some of the most valuable and magical moments of my carreer.

René is a really lovely person, a true gentleman. I must confess I was a little worried about approaching him, but after being his interpreter during a one-man gala he did at this convention, I felt comfortable enough to have a little talk.
It ended up being a 2 hour one one one session, besides the public that would come by and watch some magic too. Deeply enlightening, the man is like living poetry! |

For people who are doing this routine, have you found any better line than "It can't be done any slower" ?

The oil and water routine can be found in the sources mentioned in this post. It is important to learn this routine not for the technical aspects but for the "why he does it that way". The presentation is more than just "i'll do it slow". Look at what comes before and after that. WHY?
Rene speaks of this routine during his teaching. I call it "the sister trick" to the three breadcrumb routine since they both share a very particular aspect of "the simple" yet they differ in both presentation substyle (a branch of Rene's whole style),structure, and methodology. Put it simple, Rene does these two routines when he goes on TV because of how they interact with one another. I honestly don't think ANYONE can do this routine like Rene or even should try. Method wise this routine needs Rene's grace in order to be pulled off to the 100%. I came up with my own version that has more method support, meaning it is more "safe" than his method. I don't have the age and deep look that Rene has, so I morphed the routine to my style. However, I can't link both "sister and brother" tricks together like he does for something I yet don't understand. Sure, anyone can do the two tricks. But should you? |

Irving, I appreciate the thoughts. I don't want to do Rene's oil and water but I would like to know his handling, I feel I can gain a great deal by learning Rene's handling, not to mention I can see his one-handed technique being applied to a much larger range of tricks than oil and water. This is more about me trying to expand myself than it is me trying to impersonate Rene.

In my opinion Rene's method is one of the simplest out there except for the final phase that requires some false dealing. In any case, the first phases, when done one handed, and "the move" is substituted by the switch done in the spreading and separation of cards, it becomes a powerful two handed routine. Actually, if you give the spectator the chance to deal one of the packets (as per Ortiz's routine in Scams and Fantasies) then you got yourself something quite simple.
Again, my advice, get Mysteries of my Life and read through the whole thing. Look at why this trick is in that specific part of his show. The techniques are not as important afterward |
