After a little over 8 months of practice, I'm satisfied I'm ready to perform Cardboard Chameleons (Daryl) in public. My issue is is trying to find a colorful, contrasting yet eye-catching selection of backs, while making certain the faces match (same index font, same colors, same pip designs, same royalty images).
I've been thinking about it and am considering buying a Bicycle Rainbow Deck. All the faces will match a standard Bicycle deck and I get a fairly nice selection of colors and designs I have 2 questions I'd like your opinion on: 1. Is there a better deck out there for my purposes? I'm not married to the Bicycle faces but I do need the pips of the chameleon cards to match the "selected" cards (that's kinda the whole point of the trick--they have to match exactly). I'm not too fond of Bee-ish casino back collections. They aren't really eye-catching, in my opinion. Anything else out there? 2. Can someone with 2 or more Bicycle Rainbows tell me if the cards are identical from pack to pack. That is, if you were to pull the 7 of hearts from each of 2 or more packs, would the back designs and colors match exactly? Or would one 7 of hearts have a blue Squeezer, for example, and another 7 of hearts have a yellow Tally Ho? Whatever deck I chose, I'll need to get 3 of them to make my chameleon packets. I know Daryl sells a packet on his web site, but it's (1) a dedicated 6 chameleon cards, not a full 52 cards * 3 decks, (2) pretty expensive for 6 cards plus shipping, and (3) the backs are the same as included in the Rainbow Deck. I've bought a lot from Daryl, especially lengths of his rope and several DVDs, but I'll pass on his chameleon offer. Really looking forward to doing this in public! Can't wait to put together an eye-catching packet! Thanks for your thoughts on deck options. |

Have you considered learning card splitting? That way you could use any back you can get your hands on and not be limited by what the associated front looks like. You just have to make sure the split cards are close enough in size.
You could also consider contacting Christian (http://www.card-shark.de) and see if you can get a good deal there. He might even be able to personalize it a bit by varying the fronts and backs used. |

I think all Bicycle Rainbow decks are the same since they were printed by the USPCC.
I seem to remember that Daryl's original Cardboard Chameleons came with Jerry's Nugget cards. Since they are not readily available anymore, I think your Rainbow Deck idea is probably a good one. I think Daryl is coming out with a new version of this w/ DVD. I believe he mentioned it when he was on TMC a while back. I wonder what cards will come with it? This is such a great card trick. What about some Tally Ho Decks, one red one blue (different backs) and maybe a green bike deck?
I like the idea of different cards, but I also like using traditional looking back designs.

Another possibility is to use decks made for hotel/casinos. They would need to be made by the company, Carta Mundi, Gemaco, etc. You can find these on eBay. For instance, you can get brand new Wynn cards in two different back designs, and 3 colors, brown, deep red and a violet blue.
You can get casino cards made by the same company in many different colors and uncancelled. This will require more work on your part. Good luck.

But, he's not sure when. He told me that the cards have already been printed. Two Tally Ho designs (red and blue) and a green Bicycle back. So, Dinger... are you also a mentalist? Robert |

Thanks, Robert and all.
Yes, I do recall a set of Jerry's Nuggets in some earlier advertising, somewhere. But as you pointed out, that's not really an option these days. As to the Tally Ho choice, those are already in the Bicycle Rainbow Deck, yes? At least I think so. I was actually planning on using the fan back design from Tally Ho, Squeezers and the older "framed" rider back bicyle in yellow, blue and green, respectively (with red modern rider backs as the "selected" cards). Still, a set of blue Jerry's Nggets would look wonderful. Sigh. The Wynn suggestion is one I like. Especially the violet color. I'll get a pack of those, too, and see how they compliment the backs in the Bicycle Rainbow Deck. If the pips and fonts are close, I may not even have to do any card splitting (unless I want to use the royals). I'll keep my eye out to see if Daryl does anything new with this trick in the future. Thanks for alerting me. I didn't actually buy his DVD or notes for this one, though. I watched a taped performance about 16 gadzillion times and figured it out. 'Course, it helped that I actually own and studied Daryl's Card Sleights DVD where he actually says his "Combo Count" is used in Cardboard Chameleons, then proceeds to teach the Combo Count. If it wasn't for that, I don't think I'd have ever figured it out by watching someone else perform it. Br. Richard |

Robert,
No not a mentalist, but I did see Banachek lecture last month. Something must have worn off. Faster, If those are the cards in the Bicylce Rainbow Deck great, I was thinking of a different deck I believe.

You can buy green backed, orange backed and other color backs in Bicycle cards from the USPCC that matches perfectly the face of the standard Bicycle pips. I think Cardboard Chameleons is a wonderful effect from Daryl. I used to perform it but I haven't done in so long that I would have to re-learn it. However, all the time spent in learning it is rewarded in the impact this routine has. It literally makes people gasp when done properly. I have had the experience. Also, Daryl sells refills for the "Chameleon Cards". You may want to check with him.

This is taught on The Greater Video Library: Our Best Vol. 1, I believe.

So you're going to spend loads of money on cards rather then spending $10 on the actual trick...? Where's the logic in that? You get the cards with the trick: Red & Blue Talley Ho's and a green backed Bike (That's what's in my set). Plus, it's A LOT cheaper than buying 3 decks of rainbow cards. Not only that, but there may be a thing or two you missed when you deconstructed the trick which will be clear in the instructions.
Plus, you'll be supporting the creator which, frankly, you really should do if you are performing this trick in public. When you buy a trick, you aren't just buying the secret, you are buying the right to perform it in public. I wish more magicians realized this...

Um well, gee, Cameron....
I paid for Daryl's Sleights videos some $300.00, more or less, as I recall. On disc 7, Daryl explains his Combo Count (and other counts needed) which are needed to do the Cardboard Cameleons, which he actually TELLS you so you KNOW HOW TO DO THE HANDLING. Read this statement again. Then read the previous statement. Badda bing! Badda boom! I bought the videos NEW, from L&L. They weren't used, pre-viewed videos. I still have them. I haven't made copies nor sold or given away the originals. On his Sleights DVDs, he encourages the buyer to use what he teaches to perform the many card tricks out there in magicland. I don't think Daryl is trying to steal from himself by saying this to the viewer. I don't like the cards he's offering at the moment and won't be using them. If I did acquire his cards, I'll have 6 and can do the trick. If just 1 card gets soiled or lost, I'll have 5 cards and no trick. If I buy the Rainbow decks, I have dozens of packets and can always do the trick with a new packet when an old one is soild or lost. I don't sell my time nor my effects. I perform free for charities and churches, and no, not during their fundraisers. Only during fun events where no money leaves the hands of those being entertained. I don't get a dime. The charity or church doesn't get a dime off my performaces, directly or indirectly. I didn't steal his trick. I didn't get a pirated copy. I didn't download the instructions off some web site or had a friend make a copy and mail it to me. I watched his instructions (which I PAID for), then watched another magician's public performace (which was offered free). I then employed my brain and used what Daryl taught me on his videos which--did I mention?--I PAID for. So you're telling me that since I paid for the sleights and paid for knowledge that those sleights are used in Cardboard Cameleons, that I can't use the sleight in any trick unless I also buy the trick in which the same sleight is taught a second time? I have to pay twice? Aren't you unwittingly putting Daryl in the position of ripping off magicians by selling them the sleight but giving them no moral right to actually use it unless they pay a second time for each specific trick? I do think you're misreading this one, my friend. Daryl is my favorite card master and he has (along with L&L) probably close to $750.00 of my money. I continue to buy from him. I just don't like his card back offerings at the moment, nor the fact that it's only 1 packet of cards which become useless when a single card is lost or damaged. I learned straight from Daryl how to handle the cards for this trick. And I PAID him for that knowledge. I PAID him for the additional knowledge of the sleights being used in Cardboard Cameleons. I learned some patter and sample routining from another magician (whom I am NOT copying but have devised my own routine) who put his performance on YouTube for free. My concience is clear on this one. But thanks for checking. Peace. Brother Richard |
