I just watched the the Richard Osterlind 13 Steps videos and loved 'em all.
I attended the taping of the performances which were fun ,bewildering and often powerful. (By the way MOST of the audience are lay people who really are having fun.) I particularly like the interview parts with Richard and Jim Sisti after each section. With mentalism the performance and context are so important to having a good outcome that the extra guidance is really needed. I'm thinking they have inspired me to read 13 Steps as well. I also thought Sandy Sisti did a great job in the blindfold two person act. Although I've seen people do this kind of act more smoothly they were pros with a lot of experience. This was not Sandy's regular "thing". She made it clear that a regular (albeit talented) person could learn this act. Of course Richard was on the other end which didn't hurt but it really made it seem attainable to me. An amazing resource! I can't wait to start working on some of my favorites. -Mary Mowder |

I also received a defective case and the folks at L&L were very gracious and will be sending out a replacement. It is good to see a company that stands behind their products.

Can't wait to get this.

This set is the new starting place for anyone getting into mentalism in the 21st century.
12 hours of instruction from one of mentalism's most respected performers/creators makes this set the biggest bargain in instructional DVDs I have ever seen. If the economy was not so lousy, they probably could have easily gotten away with charging twice as much. You not only get methods, effects and explanations, you get so much more. You get advice, anecdotes, variations etc. taken from years of Mr. Osterlind's experience as a working mentalist. Mr. Osterlind also has no problem slamming on the brakes to describe (and demonstrate) methods for dealing with an over zealous spectator so, for all intents and purposes, you get a 14th Step: Audience Management. This set is everything I expected it to be and more. It has "DVD of the Year" written all over it. Messrs Osterlind, Sisti and Falanga deserve tremendous thanks for producing this addition to our libraries. |

OK, I ordered this DVD set for $75 at Madhatter and can not wait to get it. It will likely take me months to get through all the material in it and a lifetime to master it. But actually I will be happy if I can master even a handful of the effects on this set.

Would this be overwhelming to someone looking to start in mentalism? Perhaps picking up the book first would be a better idea?

I believe the DVD's are made to inspire you to read Corinda's 13 steps. It has been said that this book is a must if you are starting in mentalism. Be aware that 90% of mentalism is performance.
This is just what I have learned since getting interested in mentalism.
Magic is a vanishing art.

Many people will tell you that nothing is better than the original book... I personally think the DVD set contains a good enough teaching of the best things out of that book. So don't feel indispensable to pick the book first

Thanks for the feedback. In browsing in this part of the Café I have seen it stressed over and over that Mentalism is more about the performance. The price of the DVD may be a bit steep for someone looking to start, so the book may be a better route.
