I think someone reading in this section of the Magic Café may be able to help me remember the name of the simple game in which players are dealt or cut to a card and the high card wins.

I am working on a gambling-themed prediction effect, and would appreciate any help.

I know it but I can't think of what it is called at the monent but its well decribed in an an old book I have. I will have to look it up and get back to you on it.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

The cutting to the high card game has a few names: banker and broker, Dutch bank or Blind hooker.

"Cutting to the High Card" sounds like it will have more instant recognition from an audience, and this name may serve best since this performance should be nothing like a gambling demonstration/explanation.

Is there ever a special or dramatic time when this game may be played--such as some kind of tie breaker?

So you're working on a "gambling themed prediction effect" that you want to be "nothing like a gambling demonstration/explanation"?

Seems a contradiction.

The answer to your question without getting into every possible regional iteration is Banker and Broker.

If you want to go with "cutting to high card" go ahead, but know its called banker and broker. Maybe work that in, explaining that name during the start of the effect?

Why does a gambling theme require a gambling explanation or expose'? If it helps, I'll go ahead and tell you that I'm trying to adapt "Casino Royale" [the Larry Becker mental magic effect] so that it is easier to understand in China where "Blackjack" is not a household word.

I found out the Chinese name for what I think is the same "high-low" game: "Bi Da Dian" (loosely translated, "High Card.") It worked very well using a more familiar game for a Chinese audience. Back in the U.S., I would stick to Blackjack or Poker for this effect.
