I know that there is a specific area for introductions, but was hoping to say hi directly to my brothers and sisters in Christ.
I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Area and have been performing magic as a hobby for about 10 years. I am still not doing a lot of shows, but occasionally perform on stage for my church. I am really excited about this forum and recognize a few Minnesota folks from their posts. I hope I can contribute as well as grow here. In Christ, Shawn |

Welcome friend!
I spent some time in Minneapolis a few years ago, and have never seen such beautiful blue skies as you have there in the winter. I also got frostbitten ears while watching folks parade though the streets for the Winter Carnival. Man, it is cold there in the winter! But nevertheless, we welcome you, and look forward to your contributions here. Some of the best contributions made here are the questions that make us all think. So don't be afraid to ask. Glad you decided to join us here! BroDavid

Shawn,
Welcome to the Café. I spend about a hour and a half in (the airport of) your fine city every Sunday. (waiting for my flight to San Fran.)

Looking forward to what you have to say, 10 years experience is a very good teacher. See you around Shawn. GlenD

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
GlenD mentioned that 10 years is a good teacher. I still have a lot left to learn, but over the last couple of weeks of reading the Café, I have realized what 10 years has taught me, and if I am so blessed what the next 10 might. Like most of you, I have spent many dollars buying effects only to toss them into the truck to collect dust or spend big bucks for the newest, coolest trick at the convention. If 10 years of experience has taught me anything, it has taught me that this hinders my ability to be the best that I can. In many ways I have traded the hard work and discipline of practice for the cool self working stuff that often isn't very practical. Don't get me wrong some of the simplest stuff is great. I just dug out Cardtoon 2 and have been working on that and love it. I just won't have it with me all the time I am asked to perform. Simply put, much of what I have done and invested time and money into hasn't gotten me where I want to be... and perhaps where God wants me to be. So for now I am done buying the new magic... at least as far as close up goes. And instead will spend time working on stage and parlour sized stuff as well as sleight of hand for close up. I would be interested in hearing more about what time has taught you folks. Shawn |

Excellent decision Shawn! That is probably the most valuable magic related advice any of us can learn. Thanks for saying it out loud!
I made the decision about two years ago, that I would stop buying new things, until I either got rid of, or performed everything I already own. And that has gone reasonably well.... At least I do perfrom the new stuff I buy now and only buy what I know I will use. And I have actually sold some of my "collection" that I knew I would never perfrom. But at that time, I also decided to learn some real card and coin skills and flourishes and quit depending solely on Self Working gimmick effects. I figured the practice would keep me from thinking I needed every new trick that got a good review...But anyway I couldn't be happier with the results. I now have fair card skills and fans and flourishes, am getting along with some coin work now. So Now I don't need to be loaded with this and that to do magic, I can make magic with a couple of coins from my pocket, a deck of cards, a TT and a couple of rubber bands. Learning a couple of skill moves really gives me confidence in performing that I didn't have before. So now when I am intending to perfrom, I can do some self working stuff (I love the Hopping Half), packet tricks, etc, and mix that with some magic that relies on skill and have a much stronger act altogether.
