Rather than the actual skill of lock picking (which I've always felt to be a little overrated when it comes to escapology) I'm interested in looking at routine where locking picking is a theme or device, perhaps using a Cannon's Pickable Lock.

For example, the performer explains exactly how to pick a lock while methodically picking one in front of the audience.

He's then shackled up and has to pick the lock to escape. Of course, something goes wrong (loses/drops/breaks/swallows the pick) and has to escape another way.

Is this a common theme?
Does anyone use it?

PS - For such a routine would you recommend something like this nice set of chain handcuffs as an escape that uses a padlock but doesn't require metres of chain.

Never performed a lock picking routine myself. I've always left as a "method" I use that's just there. But never really talked about. Kind of like mentalists suggest the use of psychology.

As for the cuffs you suggest I would never use those. The method is over used and they look like a prop. However, you might like to take a look on Clyde's website http://www.mighellsillusions.com/store.html at his chain jacket.

It's very cool. And is a full body escape so will look more impressive as a finale for you routine. I think it can be performed in full view too, which is nice Smile

The chain jacket looks great!

It might be overkill for my character as a con man.

Cuffs seem a better fit (no pin intended)

any padlock based cuffs you can recommend.

Perhaps a padlocking figure-8 cuff, like:

My routine currently stands as follows

1) I teach the audience how a lock works and how to pick a lock.
2) I get shackled with manacles
3) I escape in 20 seconds

It's quite a simple routine with a little comedy thrown in.

Do you think I need more?

I'm more partial to the Don Hinz "Full-view Handcuff Escape" routine.
