I decided a long time ago that I loved Lance Burton's "style". That gentlemanly form of magic that was so popular in Victorian times and so on. I would like to do that, unfortunetly it does kind of limit the magic I do to a certain extent.
For instance, it would be completely out of character to saw through my neck with a string (SAW illusion), even though it is a really good trick. And it would really be in bad taste at a dinner party. Card T&R is a much more appropriate trick, as are the linking rings. Unfortunately find such tricks to amazed and amuse is hard, and its even harder to learn patter for them. Maybe I should buy some Burton DVDs or something (Lance, not Tim Burton... that would be weird). At the minute I am trying to find a way of joining two borrowed rings together, but I don't know if such a trick currently exists. If it does it would be great to add the arsenal, because it just "fits". Tom xx

There's a lot of truth to that. But then again, on the other hand, floating rings can be made to look absolutely brilliant in the right hands, and I suspect that if you ask a spectator what he thinks of any number of tricks, you should prepare for a dose of reality.

Eshla, you gotta understand where Lyle is coming from. Professionals hate to see unprofessional ruins the game for us. The person you perform for might have never seen a magician before; if they see a sub-par show, they might never even consider hiring another magician. If they do, it will be harder for us to close the sale.
That said, if you are performing for your friends and family, you should be ok. They are going to be kind to you since you are PART of them. No amount of advise from me or anyone on the internet is going to help you. You can only learn from real gigs. You are frustrated right now because you don't know enough tricks to develop an act. Weeellll, this is why we tell you "not to get ahead of yourself". Because clearly you are not ready. You need to be a diligent STUDENT of magic bro. You need to learn all that you can first, then you can develop an act, THEN you can perform for people. ONE thing that really irks me is your low regard for sleight of hand. Brother, if you ever dream of becoming a professional, you are going to have to have to have to have to HAAVVEETTOOO have chops. Nothing is more instantly resettable than sleight of hand. You can only do so much with gimmicks, and you won't have enough pocket space to carry them.

I perform James Swains "Passing Along The Vanishing Aces" quite often in strolling work, and it kills them, because I have practised the core sleights (Cover and Riffle) pass to the enth degree.Theres no way a layman is gonna pick up those cards and do that. Skill will always be safe in your hands..and the no sleights crowd cant follow your route. Its a very satisfying position to be in,and not in a smug,Im better than you way either.

HUH??????????????????????????????? With all do respect, how old were you. Seventeen? You missed it here, your challenge is to find your "own" style. My advice, don't be a copy-cat of lance in his younger years. There is only one and that is lance. I've said enough. I wish you wisdom in your search, my best, Ronald |

I am not copying him, and never have. I just like certain parts of what he does. I'm sure all magicians fall into some catagory or another; some like to be "gentlemanly", some like to be "mysterious" and act like Blaine, keeping quite and moody, others may be like Copperfield, all excited and bouncy. They never copy exactly, but all human beings have categories.

I will say only one thing about the situation. When people ask you to do something like this based on seeing you do a couple of tricks, it is sort of your responsability to tell them you can't really do it.
Do not forget a couple of things. To a bride this is the day she has been planning since she was old enough to think, and her mother even longer. The groom is just the jerk trying to bring it in under budget. If you are less than spectacular, she may not be so happy with you. Secondly remember that you will be spending the rest of the night with the people whom you attempt to perform for. Conditions will not be great for stage things I promise. Drinks will be flowing and audience management skills would really be a nice thing to have in such a situation. Last, and certainly not least was something Christopher touched on about painters. He is right. I always thought of it like this. You do not become great by doing thousands of things one time. You become great by doing one thing, thousands of times. Just a thought. I am not trying to discourage you in any way, just pointing out some facts, that are less painfull if you think of them ahead of time, instead of in front of 250 people you have to spend the rest of your night with.

Odd how you never even mentioned them, yet in your first few posts it is pretty glaringly obvious you have yet to learn them. 3 months is not enough time to learn them. Incidently you left out learning the most important thing. Development of "charecter", without which the magic is simply an unrelated series of tricks. We must crawl before we walk run or fly. Everyone had to.
