Our Surnateum's Dpt of Witchcraft recently acquire various items used against evil and witches.
- Two Witch bottles from England (one is the Bellarmine type, the other is just a jug: both from the XVIth century.) The Bellarmine bottle contained two iron crosses in the shape of the Irish (or crown of thorns) cross. According to the purpose of the crosses, we suppose the crown of thorns is the most probable. The two Bellarmine fragments are from Raeren (XVth century) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_bottle - A door (window) silver knob presenting the face of a demon (Belgium XIXth century) - The second witch bottle (XVIth century) and two Witches Balls (England XIXth century) from a private collection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_ball We are ready for Halloween. |

Even if the name of "Bellarmine" is linked to the infamous cardinal who condemned Giordano Bruno to be burned at the stake in the year 1600, we strongly believe that the bearded man is Wotan (Odin).
No, it isn't Eugene Burger. |

More Witch Balls found this weekend.
The big golden one is similar to the one at the London V&A Museum. |

I find the nails and other ironwork fascinating. Not sure about the content of the last picture - they look like Christmas tree baubles!

My Grandmother had a huge witches ball in her hallway - and yes they do look like an outsized Christmas tree bauble. They were supposed to confuse evil spirits that might come in through the front door with you.

The jug with the bearded face is called Bartmann jug. Since the 16th century such jugs are produced near my hometown Cologne in Germany. For more information have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartmann_jug
There are still two companies in that small town called Frechen that produce these jugs: http://www.bartmannkrug.de/ http://www.toepfereizimmermann.de/ |

The Holywell witch-bottle is on display at the Museum on London: http://www.museumoflondonarchaeology.org......ttle.htm .
For information on an American witch-bottle, see the Essington on this site: http://www.museumoflondonarchaeology.org......ttle.htm .
Pleased to continue finding that all the world's a stage.

Now I should create a test to prove there's a witch inside the ball.

First thought is something PK, either with the bottle moving or something moving in the path of the opening as the bottle is uncorked.
Second thought would be a form of a "litmus test" with something changing colors as the bottle is opened near the test site. Chris |

Good ideas Chris, but the "witch bottles" may also have influence on something outside them.
