Hi
Not sure if this has already been asked, but what would YOU consider to be the best and most effective, fun kids trick? I await your reply Cheers Paul |

Miser's Dream wins that hands down in my opinion.
Also, I do a comedy Milk Picture routine, with a Comedy Bar Tap, Comedy Funnel, Squirting nose, Glasses with windsheld wipers, etc. routine. Just edited this message... The rabbit in the hat trick is the best! Oh, I just can't make up my mind!

As far as getting oohs and aahs, it's the Cut & Restored Rope/Professor's Nightmare.
As far as volunteer participation, it has to be the Mis-Made Flag. Mike

The most effective kids' routine really depends on the magician, not the trick. I know I'm not saying anything new, but it is the "bits of business" and interaction with the children that make a routine effective--for kids or adults.
Having said that, there are certain pre-made routines that generally work well with most magicians. The old comedy funnel and milk, where one child "pumps" the milk out of the other, is inherently funny to watch. There again, some magicians may have moderate success with this routine, whereas others may make it a "reputation-making" routine. One would most likely have best results with a routine using lots of color, at least one audience helper, and plenty of quips. A puppet might even become the highlight of your show if it is done right. I don't mean to take away from those who already answered this question. I think they would agree that the "best' routines are the ones that have been personalized to fit the performer. Scott

Scotts right. The trick really depends on the magician. I do the bent penny routine for the kids in the neighborhood. It's all they can talk about. I have even had their parents come over and ask to see it because they didn't believe their kids.
In case you don't know the trick it is where you place a penny in the childs hand and have them close their hand really tight into a fist. I tell them I will make the penny disappear from the hand. When I don't they open up their hand to find the penny bent. So you see, it's not what trick is best, it's how you present your best trick. But I believe a lot of rope magic is very good for kids. As in Professors Nightmare, Cut and restored, I also have the linking ropes and get a better reaction to that then I do with linking rings. But my patter and technique with the ropes is better than the rings. SloMo

No doubt presentation makes a difference, the penny in the elbow, paper tears, and paper trees, all are entertaining. Putting aside, the technical and the presentation, and the magician, if there was just one trick that every magician "should do" for kids, what would that trick be?

A well-made "Run, Rabbit, Run" (or variation thereof) always seems to go over well with children audiences.

I think the mosted loved routine I do is the Rabbit in the hat puppet. Not much magic there but the kids come alive when the puppet comes out. you can see it in all their faces. Den where did you get the squirting nose I have been looking for one.
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

The squirting nose, some gag shop 25 years ago! Never saw another either. And yes, I just changed my Miser's dream to the Rabbit in the hat. It is the best ever, but when it happens, the rabbit steals the show, so I do a running gag with it, pulling a spring skunk, a flat rabbit, then at the end a rabbit silk and a steal for a real rabbit. Shows over!

HH Rabbits and Wenk's effect are not. The rope trick is in my 2001 lecture booklet and in "Great Scott! It's More Magic!" and on my upcoming video. The rest are in my new book, to be released in the next few months.

Miser's Dream, absolutely!
I open every kids' show with this. For some reason, kids don't think you're a "real magician" (whatever that is) unless you can pull a coin from behind their ears. On that note, the coin comes from "behind" the ear. For years, I pulled a coin "out of" the ear. Until a fellow magician pointed out that kids could try this at home by jamming coins in their ears first. And you certainly don't want that to happen! cheers, Peter Marucci |

Philemon,
For an "ear from coin" routine, check out my Showtime column in the Linking Ring of September, 1998. Holding a coin in one otherwise empty hand, I pick it up with the other (shown empty except for the coin, now) and pull a rubber ear from the coin. Kids love it! Probably because they consider it gross! cheers, Peter Marucci |
