Since then I've done it for a few large groups and got the same impact every time - excellent. I recently started deriving the 'seed' number from two separate specs throwing my Multidimensional (Promystic) once to get the two digits of my seed number (I use either first-number/last-number, last-number/first number or a multiplication of the two to get the nicest 'seed' I can. The drama of the post its with the mystery of the dice derivation of the seed number is dynamite. |

I've been using this for a long time, stumbled on it after a google search so it's nice to know who to thank, cheers Bill.
To get the number I say "Think of a number between 1 and 100, low numbers are easy, high numbers are difficult. Try and think of a nice challenging number, don't make it too easy for me, but hey, don't make it impossible either." So far I have never been given an unsuitable number. I present this as a running gag, I have them write the number on my pad to keep for verification. I try a few numbers, all wrong and say "You are hard to read, I will come back to you". After each effect I try a few more numbers, all wrong. This carries on as a running gag after each effect. After my "closer" the grid is still a couple short, I say "Wait I never did get your number" I add the last couple of numbers, of course both wrong then I say "I give up what was your number?" They tell me and I say "You can't see your number up here?" then I reveal the magic square. Good thing with this approach is if I ever do get an unsuitable number I can reveal it then ask someone else for a more challenging number. They don't see the magic square coming so it gets very good reactions. Only done it parlour so far but this will be in my stage act for certain. Mark |

Glad to see the revival of an old thread, and happy to hear many have found this useful. It's still one of my go-to effects in many impromptu situations.

Great Idea Mindbender. Reading it I was thinking you can use this idea to make another revelation.
For example before the show you can get the name of a spectators pet using any method which allows you to get the information without him being aware. You can tell him to think of the name of his pet as much as possible during the show but not tell anybody. When you want to do your magic square presentation you can choose him and tell him to name a number. He will name a number and you will do your magic square using post it notes but on a square of glass. After you are done with the presentation and all people applaud and are amazed, say like and aftertought: "Also..." And turn the square of glass around to show the revelation of the name of the dog. ( You just have to write the right text on the back of the right post it notes before starting the show ) Now there is a very good DR here at play because he will be amazed that you know the name of the pet but the people in the audience will be even more amazed when he will be amazed. Little do they know Check http://s18.postimg.cc/cwtm0wa21/reveal.png for an example I hope you like it. Any other information can be revealed this way. I think its a good revelation |

Mindbender, I'm back on this again: your square presentation has elevated my square presentations to a much more entertaining level. Last night I used it for a large group on foot of a question looking for the average age at which people purchased their first home - and had a spec come up and help me: I'd call out the numbers for the square at random and she'd fill the Post Its and place them randomly on a flipchart - with me taking a bow immediately afterwards. On foot of the puzzled pages I constructed each of the four outside borders of the square, one by one, finishing with filling in the centre squares. It plays so well.

Here we go, resurrecting this thread once again...
I've just come up with a method for producing a magic square which eliminates much of the memorization of the square itself, Replacing it instead with a few simple rules. It would, I believe, complement Mr. Mindbender's method quite nicely, although if you're more a calculating type, that's OK too. This particular technique is to do with constructing the square itself after you've got the couple of starting values. It's very applicable to the post-it presentation, because you'll be moving numbers around, and post-it notes are perfect for that. My question is, is anyone interested? It's a bit long and "diagram-y" to post here right now (plus its just scribbles on bits of paper at the moment) , but if there's enough interest, I'd be happy to try to make it more readable. Also, since I haven't read a huge amount on the various magic squares, I'd be interested to know if this is similar to anything that's been published, discussed or used before, if so, and it's being sold by someone, I wouldn't want to tread on any toes by making if freely available. |

Lovekey1998, nice thinking! I like that.
Delirium, great to hear you're getting such a strong response. WilburrUK, I know of a few methods that, to some degree, rely on a sequence of rules. Chuck Hickok's Diagonal Magic Square for example. If you ever do write it up, I'd love to look at it. I'm always looking for new ways to do the square. You may be interested to check out an article and screencast I did for Grey Matters called Magic Squares for the Mathematically Challenged. |

Magic Square enthusiasts may like to check out my new free Magic Square Generator web app.
http://www.mindmagician.org/magicsquare.aspx This generates elegant balanced 4x4 magic squares for any total (34-9999). The algorithm used in this app uses the method taught in my ebook "Mostly Perfect". Mike |
