Just like to find out whether you would get a printed documentation for the performance rights to original illusions when you buy it directly from the originator/builder? Anyone can shed light to this? Thanks!

It would seem to me that if you buy it directly from the originator/builder by mere virtue of the fact that he sold it to you confers the right to perform it. I believe that the whole business of the creator or an effect attempting to limit or restrict the performing rights, while it sounds good and may discourage some from performing it, is of highly questionable legal standing and would be difficult, if not impossible, to enforce so long as the effect was legitimately purchased from either its creator or a duly authorized dealer.
Bill Palmer would be a good guy to ask.

I remember that there was a big to-do a number of years ago over this issue concerning a particular book. All the hype was there in the ad copy about what great material was inside (and it really was!) and how audiences flip over it, etc. So, you bought the book, took off the shrink wrap, opened it, and there on the copyright page, it stated that performance rights were not granted!
That raised more than a bit of a firestorm, and as it turned out, was not enforceable legally.

Much of this limited or restricted performance rights' in books on magic started (in my opinion) as an attempt to duplicate the restrictions associated with printed play scripts. In other words, you could buy a copy or copies of a dramatic work for study in a class room for a certain minimal fee...but if you wanted to stage the play for performance , then other fees were attached or negotiated.
I'm not sure what book Scott is referencing, but I know thatthe late Bruce Cervon tried this with his books to general displeasure

Funny that you mention Bruce. Although he certainly developed lots of original card magic, I don't recall much of it ever getting into his act.
