Greetings all, and apolOgies if this post is in some way inappropriate or considered advertising.
I am currently in the process of writing a new musical set in a magic show. It will go into production late next year at a semiprofessional theater in North Carolina with considerable resources. It is fairly dark, and will as you can imagine require heavy technical work. This is not a magic show, it is a Broadway (god willing) musical about a magician, and his assistant, and their relationship. The nature of the story will necessitate some fairly elaborate stage illusions as well as some intimate small effects. I am looking for: 1. Suggestions in terms of a small levitation device that could be used during a song, or any other possible devices that could be deployed by the singer for the better part of a three minute song length. 2. Some advice on how to go about forming a relationship with a magician advisor for the initial creation of the illusions. This magician would need to create illusions that not only work on their own merits, but can be integrated logically into the script, and can be handled by a performer who ultimately would be a singer/actor and not a magician. I have heard great things about this community, and if this post can be moved to the appropriate forum if necessary, I would appreciate it. Dr. Kevin Badanes Creator of "Magician" |

Greetings kb,
Music and magic scarves, hankies, foulards go very well together. Floating away from the performer under control then returning and changing color. Easy to perform and with the flutter of the fabric you can produce various rythyms. Also color can add to the spectacle. Other things I can think of are floating objects such as the zombie ball, they are reflective and with the proper lighting changes can add to the illusion. Floating tables and a few flowers to fire. All of these can be found on store web sites. Splended effort hope all works well for you. Regards Leinad

Kevin,
Good luck with your project. Are you writing both the music and the lyrics? Back in the 60's--during my Oscar Hammerstein phase--I wanted to work on a musical about a magician and came up with this song: (Magician sings as he spreads cards for girl to select one) Pick a card! Pick a card! It isn't hard to pick a card! Any card! Pick a card! Pick a card! But no matter what you pick In this special magic trick You will always pick the queen of hearts because Of one condition That's observed by each magician To employ the queen of hearts whene'er he does A magic trick of love 'cause the miracle thereof Is the greatest kind of magic there ever was. (Girl reaction after seeing the QH) Let me see that deck a minute! How many queens of hearts are in it? (Magician) 52. (Girl) Why YOU....!!!! (Magician) No matter what you name me Can you really fairly blame me Since I'm just a helpless slave of love's command? (Girl) Come to think of it, I wouldn't. Why in fact, I know I couldn't 'Cause in spite of its deceptions... Love is grand! --------------------------------------------- Oscar is probably rolling over in his grave. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
