Some of the new members of the Magic Café are not new to magic. Often they have just been out of circulation for a while. Are you attending a magic club somewhere and how did you fine it?

I am new to magic myself, but I did just discover a magic society in my area yesterday, Bob. They do not seem to have a web presence anymore; they seem to have had some sort of Tripod site but that is no longer there. I do have a telephone number though so I'll give that a try.

I was directed to my local club, the Portland Society of Magicians, by the local magic shop. If you are in Portland, OR, pm me and I will send you the info.

Initially I found Ring 112 in Chattanooga by asking the MC after a “Harvest of Magic” show. He was very helpful, giving me location, time, and a couple phone numbers as well. That was 1973.
After many years out of circulation, I found myself watching a demo in a stall one magician had rented in a local flea market. After the crowd had dissipated, we started chatting, and he mentioned a local magic club. I was surprised to learn that my “old group” was still going strong. Some of the familiar faces were glad to see me, and a LOT of new faces were doing some amazing things. I guess Magicians are just so good at keeping secrets, it’s hard to find out where they meet. My advice to anyone is to ASK. Call (better yet, visit) a Magic Shop. Go see a show. Ask anyone who will stand still. Even if they themselves aren’t a member, they will probably know where to find a group.
...what if I could read your mind?

In the San Francisco bay area there must be a dozen or more clubs, all quite active. The S.A.M. and the I.B.M. are both very well represented, there is also the Oakland Magic Circle, Misdirections Magic Shop hosts regular lectures featuring top names, and I know there are others but I'm just not mentioning at the moment.
It's a good thing to be a magician in the Bay Area right now!

Hi WazMeister,
Depending on where in Kent you are, there is also the Downtown magic club: http://www.downtownmagicclub.co.uk/ |

I was asking about clubs in the Chicago area here on the Café. Neil Tobin saw my post and invited me to S.A.M. 3. That was almost 4 years ago. I've been going to the meetings ever since. Then when I was involved in building the Chicago KIDabra chapter, I was invited to (and joined) the Mazda Mystic Ring as a result of an emailing I sent out to tell magicians about KIDabra. I still belong to Mazda too.
The 3rd club is S.A.M. 148 and I was invited by Rudy Alfano (I'm still there as well). I love attending the club meetings and lectures.

There are unaffiliated magic clubs and they can be difficult to find. Two in my part of the country are Wizards of the Ozarks (Branson area since 1980) and Pinebelt in Hattiesburg, Mississippi that is 13 years old. Memberships may be limited or closed also.
However, the easiest to find are International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) local Rings/clubs or Society of American Magicians (SAM) local Assemblies/clubs. Both have topics here on The Magic Café and give information you can use to locate local clubs. Both have open memberships and seek new and claim to want returning members. (Although I have never understood charging a penalty to former members that are willing to rejoin. It strikes me like a restaurant charging you a penalty for coming back there after eating elsewhere. Perhaps they really do want new members rather than returning members?) I do encourage you to get involved with a magic club or at least have coffee with other local magicians. It keeps your motor running. LOL Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I'm just getting started in magic and am not sure how long it will hold my interest. I figured if I'm still interested after a year I'll buy a membership to I.B.M or S.A.M and look up the local chapter. Just what I thought would be a good idea, although attending a chapter may help me hold an interest longer things tend to go better when you have a companion.

Unfortunately, there are no IBM Rings in North Dakota. Otherwise, I would suggest that you visit a regular meeting and pay to attend one of their lectures when lecturers come through. It gives you two of the important functions of the club.

There's nothing that I can find in my area (Yuma, AZ). The closest I can find is 3 hours west in San Diego or 3 hours NE in Phoenix. A hard round-trip after a day's work just to get to a meeting. But I'm at a point where I really do need input from more experienced people on a regular basis.
