Hello. I found this forum through a google search and it looked like a place where I'd get solid information. But I read the forum rules, and I realize that it might be wrong for me to ask about how and where to buy what I'm looking for, which I'm sure will involve pyro. So instead, I'm just asking if anyone knows if what I want to do is possible. Just a straight, binary "yes-or-no" answer. Also I am NOT a magician, not trying to be one, and I will readily admit I know nothing about this stuff. I just want to know if there's a way to make this happen. Yes I know this will sound stupid.

First of all this is not for the purpose of an actual magic trick. I just want a special effect. I am entering a chili cook-off where each team has to decorate their booth in a theme. I've taken mine to a bit of an extreme, as my partner and I are dressed as "mad scientists" and we do the whole thing a little bit like a performance.

Something I was hoping I could do this year is an effect when we're showing people how we make the chili- which will be staged with a pot of chili that will NOT be used for consumption. I'll put in ingredients, making a show of acting melodramatic. Then for the final ingredient is the effect, which I'm sure would have to be pyro. I just want to be able to drop or throw something in the pot and have it make a *WHOOF* of smoke, maybe a flash but NOT BIG. I don't want to even begin to cause problems with the people around (who will be behind a rope we set up), so I just want a little noise and smoke, maybe a flash of light, but no real explosion or flame.

The only possibility I could think of would be to take a very small piece of flashpaper, put it in pot last, and then I could light it with a wand candle lighter, as if the flame from the lighter put the final touch on the chili. But I'm afraid the flash paper will be too much, and besides, I'd rather have the act of throwing or dropping whatever it is be what sets it off. More dramatic.

If this isn't kosher for me to be posting about this, I'll gladly take it down and try some other way to find out. If people don't want to post answers here, I'll be happy to do it through PMs. But if anyone can tell me if what I'm dreaming up here, or something similar, is actually possible in some way, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Wow Fletch, this is a very well written request for help. It was very insightful coming here for advice for your culinary drama. I will leave it to the experts to answer or say which particular board might be the best for re-posting.
I will just say welcome...and be careful because many people have been bitten by the magic bug by trying to accomplish another purpose.
