I got my metal appearing cane today finally - it is beautiful and the solidity of the extended cane is very impressive. But it did not come with any explanation of how to close it again! Anyway, I was struggling and then I did find the solution here: http://revver.com/video/830853/perforamn......ng-cane/ - for anyone who finds themself in the same boat, don't panic!

Jsmes, you mean the link doesn't bring up a video for you? It's working for me, I just checked it again.

I just thought btw, if this is considered too much exposure, mea culpa. If so, mods please do the necessary and replace with an option to PM me or something, if you would. The thing is, I was so relieved to find the solution after struggling with it for 10 minutes that I jumped on here to share so as others wouldn't have to suffer the same frustration (mine is a Uday, not Fantasio, metal appearing cane, which came with just a bit of paper!)

Oh, weird! Some geographical/IP thing? Well, let me reiterate that people are free to PM me if they find themselves struggling with an appearing cane that does not have comprehensive instructions...

The cane can be dangerous to you and/or others. My attic ceiling had marks on it from my initial practicing many years ago. Be careful where you put the can in closed position. If it's in your pocket it could accidentally spring open causing injury to sensitive body parts! Practice enough so that you don't poke an eye out, i.e. yours or that of your audience. Open it when far enough from the audience to prevent injury. Closing the cane properly is a fine art which comes with practice. As stated on the video, you can do it a little at a time or, with some practice, get the feel of it and close the entire cane by holding it at both ends and experimenting as to how much pressure and twisting is necessary to close it all in one motion. A cane made from spring steel, if left in the cold or rain, or in the closed position, could rust or lose its power, and need some oiling. It may not open correctly or it could open too much and feel less taught. If this occurs, open the spring steel by spreading it out (i.e. unwinding it and making it longer) and apply a rag with oil on it to as much of the inner workings of the cane as possible, wiping off the extra oil with a dry rag. A silk isn't the only thing that can turn into a cane. You could use a shoelace, balloon animal balloon, thin piece of rope, etc. Be creative!

Thanks for the great advice, Pradell. I in fact did get a very minor cut on my finger yesterday playing with the cane - and, let's just say, I'm glad that no one else was in my immediate proximity when I appeared it a couple of times. All the twisting and teasing in the re-folding part is well worth the split-second payoff of the cane appearing, though.
