I have a trick for kids in which I tell a fabricated story of how people always wonder if the magic is in the white tips or the black body of the wand. I answer the question by taking out a wand which I've used so much most of the magic is gone. You can tell because white spots are showing through the black body. I then "recharge" the wand back to its black body. I have put a (I'm afraid very poor quality) video of it on YouTube which is virtually impossible to find. If anyone is interested you can go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8US3gKrXDiA . The idea, I think, is new and free to anyone in the Caf who can make use of it.

It sounds really interesting. Unfortunately, the link doesn't seem to be working in youtube. Can you let us know the title of the video so we can search for it?
And thanks for offering this! -Larry R.

Sorry about that ! I had the "private" box checked which caused the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8US3gKrXDiA is correct and should work now. The title is "Wand Wand".

Terrific-
It worked on me. I imagine it will be great for younger kids and I plan to try it out soon. Thanks for the idea, Larry

John,
I love the idea! I was thinking . . . (Oh no, not that!) Imagine if we could take that idea a step further and create your magic wand in a way that sort of works on the Metamorpho spot can . . showing the white spots, recharging it and saying "There we go, all recharged!" Then all of a sudden the white spots come back, and of course the children would see it and start shouting but the magician doesn't see it right away, and sort of use it as a running gag. Yes, another comedy magic wand idea but refreshing, don't you think???

After further thinking, I think I am going to make one this week and try using it in a show. Will let you know how it goes!

Thanks, you have made my day. It is a thrill to think that an idea I had will be used by people I've never met to entertain and amaze others. At the risk of repeating the obvious, the internet has changed our lives and the magiccafe is wonderful. It is also exciting to think that the idea will be modified by various magicians to suit their needs and to be improved. Life is good! I would love to hear how it works out.

Some patter ideas for the gag where the kids notice the spots came back but you don't:
"Now, it's very very very important to have a fully charged wand for my next bit of magic. If it's not totally, 100%, fully charged, then the results will be CATASTROPHIC!!" Then recharge for the first time.. "Good, now that's it's fully charged, it's safe to proceed, if it wasn't charged, I'd be in big trouble with what I'm about to do. It would be CATASTROPHIC!!!" Let the spots come back. Let them notice as you're about to wave your wand. "Oh gosh! Thanks so much for pointing that out. If you hadn't told me that, who knows what would have happened! It would have been CATASTROPHIC!" Go from there. Maybe ignore them after the 2nd or 3rd time and have a great sight gag for the botched trick. I'm thinking like a rubber chicken production instead of whatever else you were expecting. What do you think?

I love humor as part of magic. Perhaps you actually could have something "catastrophic" happen like producing a cat next to a palm tree - "cat of the tropics" instead of what you promised to produce . It just an idea.

Yeah, I was thinking a good play on words would be a nice gag.

I don't know enough about what ages think which jokes are funny, but I have one wand joke that might be integrated into the patter. Most magicians name their wands. My magician grandmother named her wand "Wanda". Only 7 magicians before her had used that name. It's true, My grandmother named the 8th Wanda of the world.
Back to the wand itself. I just used a dowel rod and painted it. Tommy's Metamorpho spot can idea is obviously much more sophisticated. Now I'm hoping my idea could be used on a variety of levels from folks who do magic for their grandkids to professional magicians. I see that there are 210 visits to this posts, and 125 visits to the video on the link, yet only 2 people making comments. Does this mean only a few people think it is worth using or is it impossible to tell? I mentioned the idea on a different thread and there were about a half dozen people responding. I guess I'd like to know if I've made a reasonable contribution to the Café community. |

Hey John,
What a great idea! I was thinking you could also gimmick the wand by painting the dowel black and then gouging rough chips and chunks out of the wand, on one side as you have directed. With this set up, you could use the wand, good side out, during a trick, the trick then does NOT work, and you beat the wand against your table trying to get it to work ( as we all seem to do with remote controls and fragile electronic devides thinking somehow that will help ) Then show the wand as trashed, express a look of horror, and go about your restore method etc. Plenty of great ideas to be created from your concept. Thanks Chance

I liked the idea and before I saw the video I had a vision of it being put in a docking station looking really cool and when it's placed into the docking station you have to put a clamp on the wand to charge it a as you do sparks fly out from the clamps. Plus it could start to smoke and all of the children would let you know, may be this could be a running gag they see it smoke and you don't! just a thought

Any suggestions on how to effectively apply the white spots to a plastic wand so that the wand truly looks worn out? Maybe white paint smeared a bit?
Thanks.

I would you a sponge to apply the paint. That would give a nice texture and maybe a couple tones of white and a gray.

It is a real treat to see the concept grow and be improved. It's a pleasure to see the trick take on characteristics I never saw. I like the chipped wand and also the various shades of grey. I didn't think of using a sponge for the applicator. Nice idea. Everyone takes a concept and makes it their own.
If & when anyone uses it I'd love to know how it goes. |
