I was wondering if some european magicians were using € coins, and if they did, what value would they use? In videos and books they only talk about American quarters .

Hi,
I use the 2 euro piece for a couple of coin routines ... but for most things, I've actually got some quarters and half-dollars .... James. |

Don't people think it's weird when you get near them with American money ?

The thing is, here in Portugal, we don't have a "normal looking deck of cards " like you do with bicycles. You can get by here with any type of cards, and they will want to see them anyway.

With the quarters, people don't even notice; it's very similar to the uk 10pence piece. I only use them for vanity!
And the half-dollar ... well, it's a nice size/weight coin, and we have no equivilent in the UK which is a sensible (round) shape! James. Whoops ... I also meant to say; people find it weirder that I use a 2 Euro coin, given the UK has not yet joined the single european currency. (Let's not have that discussion in here, though) James. |

But here I either use € coins and they think it's normal or I can use any country's coin and they immediatly say it's gimmicked or weird or that I can't do it with normal coins !

50 € cent are also comfortable and have nice weight and size and there are several "special 50 cent coins" available - shells, cig through coin, coin in bottle, ..

I was doing magic only with half dollars before. Now I try to use only 2 euro coin, it's the biggest coin in euro. When I use a gimmick coin in euro, people think I'm very good in sleight of hand and don't want to see the coin, and when I do it with a half dollar they immediately think that there was a change with a gimmick coin. But it depends a lot of the presentation of the trick and of the people you're performing for. I still think it's more magical to do a trick with a borrowed object, or with an usual object.
As I was able to get all the gimmick coins I wanted in euro, there was no reason for me to stay with half dollars (except the fact they are a perfect size for palming. ) |

By the way, if you find yourself looking for BEAUTIFULLY crafted gaffed Euro coins, check out Roy Kueppers at http://www.roykueppers.com/ . His stuff is wonderful, and several common effects are available in Euro and Canadian coins as well as the usual American ones.

Euro coins are crap for sleight of hand magic.
Too small, they don't shine. But you can now find all classical gaffed coins in Euros for all types of routines. That is where I use them.
