I don't know if anyone else feels the same way but it seems like every new product that comes out has the same promotional format.
1. Wild music
2. Wild graphics
3. Street scenes where the spectators are going crazy, jumping up and down in amazement, screaming "wow", "did you see that", "impossible", and so forth.
4. Hard to see actual performance of the effect.

I don't know about anyone else but I would like to see these new products demonstrated in a straight forward way in a studio so I can see the effect clearly and thus evaluate it on my own.

Anyone else feel this way?

What bothers me more is elaborate 30-60 second intros just to see the 15 second effect. Honestly, we don't care about intros! Smile

LOL, I agree. I also like to have the option to press play on a video, instead of having it autoplay when I check an item out on certain sites. I'm surprised some magician/satirist hasn't parodied these "down with the kids" videos. Well, maybe they have already, and I haven't heard of it. Where is the Ali G of contemporary magic Smile?

I loved Bro's promo video. These videos have a way of making a single trick dvd seem much better than they are sometimes.

I think this is because most of the time anyone who's read the right classic books (Tarbell, etc.) can spot it as a new variation on an old trick they either already have, have learned, or at the very least read about.

And I agree with everything else! Show me a simple video. I don't even want to see a reaction unless a spectator has to be there to assist in the trick.

Vendors who use these types of demos are out to make as much money as possible, and they push all keys they can - same as with, for example, beer ads. More often than not this also means the product is not too good to sell itself.

There are some people with good products who just don't know any better and copy this stupid style, while they don't have to...

Most of the stuff is aimed the the younger magicians where they will watch the video imagine that's them getting the reactions without thinking that much into the trick. where as the older more experienced magicains will watch the video to see the trick and only buy it if its right for them but for some reason most younger magicians don't think that way.

I'm just glad I found the Magic Café before too long which gives perspective when you read a lot of the wise advise given here

Quoted for truth! There are actually some very fine effects that stand on their own merits, the advertising of which is marred by this over-the-top style. Possibly the marketing is largely out of the hands of the creative minds who actually invent the effects. Well, I'd like to think they facepalm when viewing some of the ghastly trailers for their own products.
