I have something I would like to share with you here on the Magic Café. My story is not short, but this is one off those things that only comes around once in a lifetime and it happend for me. I was offered to perfrom at the Oslo Opera house which is one of the most expensive buildings ever made in scandinavia costing 4.4 billion Norse kronar.
I have only been doing magic for 9 months. I try to do at least 2-4 hours off practice every day. I would say that I do not do magic as a hobby any more I have had about 70-80 paid shows that I have done only these last 9 months. I live in Iceland which has 320 thousand people that live in the country. There are only 10 magicians that live in Iceland. I would say that I have mainly been teaching myself how to perform magic from DVD and books. I try to do table hopping at least 2-4 nights per week to train and get the experience. I was doing table hopping last Monday(2 of Nov.) like I do normaly. I was at the restaurant that I start my table hopping every time, but it closed early so I had to leave. I went to a coffee house which I had never been too before. I started showing the bartender some magic and she offered to make me a pancake in return for my magic. While I was waiting for the pancake there was a man that walked up to me and wanted to speak to me about the Icelandic depression. I could hear that he was not from Iceland I found out later that he was from Norway. I told him that I have something that is much more interesting to show him. I show him some card tricks for 4 minuets and after he was completely stunned. He started telling me that he really liked my magic. He then asked me if I would like to come to Norway the next Thursday(5 of Nov.) to show my magic to his company in the Oslo Opera House and for other 700 people which all had companies off there own. First I thought he was drunk or something, but he assured me that he was not joking. He then asked his right hand in his company which was sitting close to him if this was a good idea. He did not understand him at first but, then he asked a girl which was hitting on his friend if I was worth it? She just started laughing and told him he was crazy. I had to think fast and started showing the girl some magic and 10 minuets later she was completely stunned. So I proved to them that I could really keep up too a high standard. Three hours later I have a plane ticket, hotel room in Oslo and a deposit for my future work. The next 2 days I train harder than ever and put down a routine for this event which was going to be the biggest magic event of my life. I leave on Thursday morning and go to my hotel. The room I stayed in costs only 1000 $ dollars for one night and was really a nice hotel in the center of Oslo called the Clarion hotel. I train for 3 hours and then its show time! I was supposed to do table hopping and strolling magic. When I first saw the Opera House I got a little scared, because the house it self was massive. The event starts of with a wine tasting from 70 off the biggest wine yards in the world. I did my magic for 2 hours during the wine tasting and I really made a huge impression. Then many people started asking for my business-card and I told them I was based in Iceland, but they didn´t care. I was told from the man who hired me to taste at least 1 brand of wine before the dinner started and I didn´t want to be rude so I tasted one brand. Everyone got a wineglass, a pen and a small book to give the wines they tasted a rating. I turn to page 25 and read about the wine and then I see how much the wine bottle costs only 500 $ per bottle! It was Chardonnay white wine and it was the best wine I had ever tasted and later I was told the most expensive wine bottle in the event costs 3000 $ per bottle. Now the dinner started and it was a four course dinner. Between each course I did table hopping on the table a sat at which was a long table with 50 people all from the same company and the owner was the man I met in Iceland. I was really shocked when I sat down at first because each person got 5 wine glasses 6 forks, 4 spoons and 6 knives. I had no idea in which order to use them or what they were for, so I just watched a guy sitting across me and copy/paste everything he did. The food was the best I had ever tasted first it was shrimp, then cod dish with nuts, main course was a sirloin steak which was amazing! and desert was ice cream sobert with fruit. I was showing a man and his wife some magic at the table during the first course. But then this mans wife spilled wine all over him, because she was laughing so hard from a trick I just did. It was not my fault, but then 2 waiters come and tell the guy to come with them 5 minuets later he comes back in a new suit and with a clean shirt a complementary from the Opera House, it was like it never happened! Then at the end off the desert I do a final trick for the whole table I was sitting at. I asked my benefactor to pick a card from the middle of my deck and not the top or bottom because I could remember them. Then he slides out one card takes a look and keeps it for him self. Then I turn around and show the a wiregram and wrap it with a slow burning flash paper and then I light it up. It goes up in flames and sparks and the wire forms the shape of the 7 of hearts. He shows everyone that this was the card he picked and then the people at the table go crazy. But during the card trick my benefactor was always drinking his wine while I was explaining the trick. When the people at the table finish there applause he tries to drink from his wine glass, but then the wine in his glass dosen´t move it has taken a form off gel. I had manged to put slushpowder in his drink without them noticing. When the people understand what had happened they give me a standing ovation. I take my bow and use the moment to tell them how happy I am that they liked my magic. Then I pick up 3 open bottles of wine and tell them I don’t only do magic I can also juggle. Now they look at me like I am nuts!! I tell them that I will now attempt to juggle these open wine bottles. I really build it up and then I say Ohh.. I am sorry I cant juggle 3 bottles I can only juggle 2 and they just burst out laughing and then I just put the bottles down and say I was only joking I don’t know how to juggle. Then I get my second standing ovation. After everything cooled down I was getting my things together while everyone else was having coffe, coniac, swiss chocolate and cigars. While I was sitting in my seat a few men walk up to me and start telling me about how they loved my magic and they would like to book me for their Christmas celebration this winter. Next thing I know I have 5 wineglasses, 2 glasses with coniac, some cigars and swiss chocolate which they had brought to me in return for my magic. And keep in mind that I am only 23 years old and these men owned there own companies some with over 400 people working for them. Now the evening at the Opera House was finished and I estimate that I had shown at least 350 people my magic during that time. Then me and my benefactor go to the hottest pub in Oslo where he was going to talk some business and hand out some cards. I was his Ice-breaker the whole time he opened with a conversation and then called me in to show magic for 3-4 min. He told me later that he had never handed out so many business-cards in one night. I had shown my magic for 8 hours on and off and it was time for me to say goodbye and head for my hotel. I sleep for 4 hours then breakfast and then I head for the airport to go back to Iceland. I am still digesting everything that happened last week. After my return to Iceland there have been 4 companies form Norway that have got in touch with me and want me to do a magic show for them. One off the companies is flying there staff to Iceland to celebrate and want me to be there private entertainer for the whole trip. I must say that I could not have done all this with out the advice from the French magician David Stone. I have both his volumes 1 & 2 on Close-up and table hopping magic. There were some priceless advice that are on there which I have been practicing for the last 9 months during my table hopping. And also I cant forget Tommy Wonder for his wonderful books on how to do magic. If you have read all this I hope that you liked my story and I hope that I haven´t wasted your time if so I am sorry. |

I am glad that those off you that read the whole story liked it. Here are the are the routines that I used that night.
Routine 1 -Here and there(happens in there hand) -ambitious card with a signed card -Biddle trick -A short spongeball routine with a funny ending. Routine 2 -Holy Moly from Sankey with Norse coins -Let them select a card I find the wrong one and then it changes in there hands -Hotshot cut, few color changes, shapeshifter and then I put the card on my forehead and let them help me find there card in the deck really funny. -Triumph with a drunken shuffel and a signed card -Card sleeve were they can see the card change Routine 3 -Dr. Daleys last trick with a new twist -Ring leader by Greg Wilson -Pk coin bend -French Kiss by David Stone Also for back up I also did: - Fiber Optics - Bill Switch called forgein affair by Greg Wilson - Haunted pack - Coin vanish with a silk and misdirect and produce a wine bottle handling from David Stone - Then at the bar I did some Paul Harris effects from his puzzle box:twilight angels, angel cake, coin bend and LVL$. For control I most often use is the classic pass, Marlo tilt and overhand shuffel. Keep in mind I did Magic for 8 hours straight and I only did 1 routine once for each group. If they did see me again and wanted too see more I went to the next routine. If I was asked to do some effect again I told them I would show them something diffrent. I never did the same effect twice for the same group. My openers were firewallet, droping a coin, card spring, dribbling cards and d-lite if dark. Each routine was about 6 minuets long. |

One more question,
did the dropping of the coin work and what happend exectly after you have done that? rené |

einzo New user 11 Posts |
Good question rené
I don't use it often but when I do I ask if anyone droped there coin? Then I make it vanish and reproduce it then I change it into a jumbo coin(handling from Jeff McBride)then tell them I am a magician. When you make this as an opener you will be surprised how many people turn there heads and look for something they think they droped. I didn´t use this opener that night, but if I feel like it I use this methood sometimes. |

I´m actualy glad you didn´t, because I think it is not appropriated, especially at this type of event.
I did it once and I found nobody is turning the head around, might it be the noise or that in reality nobody cares. on the other hand, in my opinion, it doesn´t look very good, if you are the guy who picks up the change from the floor. in general, what falls on the floor belongs to the floor, you could say. there are other ways to start with a group, that have a bit more class, that I would suggest. just my opinion, that´s why i´m glad that you didn´t. rené |

WOW Einzo,
Congratulation for you. Your story is very inspiring and you only 23 make me stunned. This story also make me more realize that magician do the magic for the laymen NOT for the other magician. Great story, Hengky |

Wow. Wonderful reading. I think the nordic countries are a bit underexposed to close up magic, or magic overall. I'm from sweden (right now I live in denmark) and I've noticed that allmost nobody have heard of restaurant-magicians and I can't really relate when a dvd says "pick it up at your local magic dealer". I am very inspired by the fact that you're so young (i'm 19) and that you could handle that after that short experience (Allthough it seems to be quite intense 9 months).
Thank you very much for your list. It was good for me to see how to plan routines (any books on that?). I think you've really given my magic intrest a boost. Jonatan |

What a great story. Before I read this I was reading a rather uninspiring thread about the Masked Magician and how that show is ruining Magic.
Then I read this!! My faith remains strong as I read your inspiring account of what happens to Magician's who take the time to share, the effort to perfect their craft, and the guts to say "YES, I can" when the right opportunity is presented. Thanks for a rather enjoyable read!! It has left a smile on my face.
