What are your top three DVD or Books for twisting instructions.
Just talk about ones you like. If there is one that is not good or one you don't care for that may be a different topic. (By the way, I'm asking about "best place to buy balloons" and "Top Three DVDs or Books" 'cause my 11-year-old does some clowning and has just decided to get into balloon sculpture in a big way. He is already better than me and shows the clowns in our C.O.A.I. alley new creations or ideas every time we meet.)

In that case, what level a twister is he? Anything by Don Caldwell is fantastic, but perhaps it would be better to start with Sandi Masori (I like Some of My Favorite Things but he might prefer Toys for Boys) or Dave Bartlett (my favorite is Girls in Gowns) or, if he is still more a beginner (doesn't sound like it though) I recommend Captain Visual's Big Book of Balloons.

I like Mark Byrne's Bad to the Balloon issue 1 and 2.
I learned a lot and it was well done, looking forward to seeing #3. Thanks Greg |

To be honest the only DVD I've ever owned was a beginner DVD to get me started. I highly doubt that I could be where I am today without the tutelage of others. I live near many people that also do this for a living, have been to numerous conventions, and have been a part of some very large, 5,000-20,000+ balloon projects with some very talented artists.
That being said, I figured a lot of this stuff out on my own without step by step instructions. I am the least artistic person I know, so it's been great for me to sit down and create my own art. These pieces are mine and force me to think about balloons in a new way. Often a door is unlocked when I do something like this. When I see a design that I like, rather than finding instructions for it, I try to make it myself. I've often failed, but I also succeed. As far as DVDs, I love that we can support a community of artists and entertainers, so if it's for you, I encourage you to buy. But I would look for DVD's that "unlock a door." Especially for the young, creative mind of your son. He doesn't need step by step instructions on how to make everything, he can probably do most of that from a picture, but he may need a push every once in a while to figure out a new technique. I strongly believe that the layperson's opinion is all that matters when we are paid to entertain them. They don't care if 20 sleights go into a single card trick, or if you borrowed your best balloon design from some guy they've never heard from BaloonVille, USA. They care about the end result, and that it was something amazing. With that in mind, I consistently make Caldwell monkeys at most of my events. The people love it, and sing MY praises, which is great to get the next booking, but I know that there was no creative process on MY part for that balloon and sometimes that bothers me. I have more thoughts, but I've rambled long enough. -Jeff

I'll second the Don Caldwell DVD's.
I've seen a lot of stuff put out by others and it's OK. But Don's really just has a style about it that I haven't seen in anyone else's work. He's definitely head and shoulders above the crowd. Cheers |

Royal and Patti Sorrell's Balloongineering series. Covers a LOT of ground! And I've heard that the David Grist series has or will be returning to DVD. Both DVD series are fundamental and well worth the investment. But any balloon teaching DVDs will usually offer up something new that you never thought of and that you will use. The first video I ever saw was Joe Lefler's Balloon Sculpture Made Easy. Though I now never do any of the basic balloons that he teaches other than the sword, I still use his 2-balloon horse and snail.

ALl of Don Caldwells DVD's Its a great stepping stone and building blocks to lots of other sculptures and I make most of his stuff every week at the places I work.
