I've just received my new set of cups and balls set plus a chop cup from Rev John. They are in great condition and I couldn't have been happier.
I've tried to search for this topic, but can't seem to come up with what I'm looking for. Basically it's this: Is there a way to coat the cups with some kind of sealant to stop the patina or the discoloring of the cups? Sorry I don't know any other way to word it. I was thinking of some kind of lacquer would seal the brass from oxidizing or whatever brass does when it discolors and needs to be polished. I love the look of them and they certainly look very high end in performance and the gimmick works a charm. Any help would be most appreciated. JoJo

JoJo,
if there is a plating company near you, they should be able to "clear coat" the cups for you.

If not, you can use Renaissance wax to coat the cups. It is not permanent, but it will slow down the tarnishing process. The wax is not cheap, but a little of it goes a very long way.

What other wax can we use if we cannot find Renaissance wax?

I find just about any wax works well. I had a spray can of "Gel Gloss" used for polishing marble countertops. It's worked quite well for me.

I called a bunch of places for Renaissance Wax and even the antique dealers had never heard of it. Maybe an ebay purchase from the UK or states is in order. I'll take a look around at some other waxes and see what comes up.
I haven't tried any plating places yet. JoJo

Have you forgotten about Google? Go to Google.com.au and use Renaissance Wax for a search term. I found a number of suppliers in Australia. Most of them are people who specialize in wood turning.

It's pretty easy to find. I bought a small can at a gun show some 10 years or so ago and still have most of it. The stuff lasts forever and doesn't go bad.

You're right. I googled it ended up in ebay with no hits for Australia. I've since found 2 places that have some.
Thanks Bill, I'll see how things work out. JoJo ps. I called a couple of plating places, and they want about $20 a cup and one won't guarantee anything, so I'm not sure about going that route yet.

Jojo, I have some cups spun by Jake (welcome back Jake!) which are clear coated and they look stunning, obviously it's a lot more expense and trouble to go to initially than the waxing option but I think it's worth it if you can find someone. Perhaps Don is offering something in that line?
You can see how bright the finish is here: http://www.cupsandballsmagic.com/Rare-RN......ets.html and they will never need polishing Bri |

Thanks for the welcome back Bri and Pete. It's hard to find a company that will guarantee the finish as far as clear coating. 20.00 is cheap compared to what ours charged us, but then again I never had any problems with the clear coats going back to the very beginning of RNT II.
Bill's suggestion sounds like the way to go, at least to start with.

If I had a set of Johnson cups that I was going to use all the time, and one of them was NOT a chop cup, I think I would have them nickel or chrome plated.

Did the chop cup still "chop"?

Though they were not Brass, before Don was fully up and running I had some cups that I got from Jake a long time ago Nickle plated (2.5's) after a long search.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158......e25s.jpg I had an unexpected bill and sold them (I regret that), as soon as I find a set at the right price I will get some done again. Bri |
