Hey Cameron,
I'm a teenage magician and I've been in magic for about 6 years. I just recently won the Junior Division of the Louisville Magic Club's Close-Up Contest for the second time! I do mainly close-up/walk-around, stage, and childrens magic. Anyways, I was just wondering what got you into magic? What were some of your experiences preforming as a younger magician? And more specifically, what was it like for you being a magician during your high school years? I've been lucky since my high school has been pretty accepting and encouraging of my magic (Side note-Lance Burton, Steve Bargatze, and former IBM president Bob Escher are all alumni), though I've heard some teen magicians say that school is one of the worst places to preform for them due to the heckling, grabbing, etc. they experience. So what are your thoughts about your younger days in magic? |

Hi, Cody!
Congratulations on your awards, btw! I started performing magic when I was about 8 years old. At the time Doug Henning and David Copperfield were really big so I wanted to be a stage magician like them. I used to make illusions out of cardboard boxes and try to shove my little brother into them and make him disappear. He never cooperated with me, though... Always tried to screw them up. I started doing magic shows for other kids when I was about ten or so. I saved up allowance money and bought things like Strat-O-Sphere, Tircky Bottles, Die Box, etc. Parlor stuff. I got an invisible deck and for years, it was the only card trick I did. I was scared to death of sleight of hand magic! Used a TT but that's about as sleight-of-handy as I got. Took magic lessons from a magician in Rochester Michigan. I believe his name was Mark St. John. Anyone from Michigan know him? Taught me one of the best self-working card tricks ever. Still use it to this day. As I got a little older, I started concentrating on acting more and more. I wound up going to the Baltimore School For The Arts for High School. But I never performed magic for my class mates. Since I didn't really do any close up stuff, it wasn't practical. Wasn't about to lug a Die Box into school. Fast forward many years. I was 27 years old when I got into sleight of hand magic. But I was a closeted magician for years, Wouldn't perform for anyone but family, really. I considered myself a "serious" actor and really couldn't see myself performing magic for people. It's only been within the last decade that I've really gotten more serious about it. Now, I still consider myself a serious actor. But I also love performing magic. I came to terms with my love of magic and am much happier for it! Anyway, that's a bit of my experience. Not typical, I know.
