Just wanted to let you know that I'm having another small run of the THF made up. They'll be ready to ship in a week or two. If these sell out fairly quickly , I'll have another run made after that.
If you've been looking for one of these (they've been unavailable for a while) now is the time. If you aren't familiar with the THF, you can see some photos and read all about it here: http://www.scottfguinn.com/otheritems.asp

I just noticed that Guinn has re-released his "Table Hopper's Friend" (clearly I don't get here as often as I'd like) The reason I'm chiming in on this is because it is one of those things that works so well that you literally never see it.
Looks like Scott's got a link to the details, but let me say that I bought one of the first of these THF's; I'll call it a bracket. It didn't come with a board or pad, so that you could customize it for your own needs. At the time I was doing hospitality work, and wanted to do some effects that would normally be a bear to carry, i.e. cups & balls, 10" linking rings, and a couple of larger production items. Following the innovator's lead, I found a wooden silver service case, minus the silver, and attached the bracket to the bottom of the case. It was already lined and padded, and my props fit beautifully. This freed me to do routines that really did play large, and the performing surface does not interfere with anything on a dining table, for example. I attached a close-up pad to the lid with velcro dots. The THF is made out of steel, and build to last to be handed down to the seventh son of your seventh son. Now, here's the part that I have a small problem with. Price should never be an object when it comes to something that works. I paid $100 for the Table Hoppers Friend when I bought mine about over ten years ago. I see that they are now being offered for half of that. Because I have been so impressed by this tool for workers, I envy those of you who take advantage of this price, and know that if you invest in one or two of these (tell your wife it's what you want for the holidays), you can organize and perform your close-up routines in a way that takes all the hassle out of prop management. Best, Vic PS - Like I said, I was surprised to see this listed. I have received no compensation for sharing my happiness with the THF here.

Hey, Vic!
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, when I first released them, they were $100. That's because we weren't set up to make them, and my brother-in-law and I made each one in my wife's dad's metal shop, on machines that were designed for other purposes. And since we didn't buy the materials in bulk, they were a lot more expensive. My cost was about what I'm charging for them now. These days I "shop out" the manufacturing to master metal worker Dave Travers of Boise. Dave has his own metal shop, he already has all the materials, and he can knock out ten or twenty in the time it took John and me to do one. And Dave gives me a really good price, so I pass that along to my customers. I still use the original prototype, which is identical to the ones I ship out. I've been using it for well over a decade, and it looks almost as good as the ones fresh from the painter. That's why I have no hesitation about offering a lifetime guarantee. This is another small run. If you want one, act fast, because they usually go fairly quickly. I'll have another run made up, but I can't say when. I can't afford to stock hundreds of them in my house, so I just have Dave make me a few at a time. Under $45 with free shipping in The States is a steal for an item that will last longer than you will!

I have been using this piece of equipment for a year now and it still looks and acts brand new. Of course nobody really sees it when you are using it but the fact that I use it so much and it still looks that same as the day I got it impresses me.
In fact one of the reasons I got the last restaurant gig is because of this. I was asked how much table space I would need. Since many of my tricks involve placing things on the table I needed this utility. When I told him I only needed 1 inch, he was impressed and said ok. Honestly, this is one of the best investments in magic I have made. Not only does it give me a nice surface to work on unobtrusively but it also doubles as a place to keep my props. If you work tables and need to set items down without invading their space, I strongly recommend this item. I am going to post a pic of what mine looks like. As you can see it even works on glass and round tables. Thanks Scott for coming up with this wonderful utility item. Alec Click here to view attached image.

The Table Hopper's Friend solves a dilemma for restaurant performers : how do you perform matrix or tabled card effects, when the table is often cluttered with drinks, chicken wing platters, etc.
Not only does the THF give you space to perform, but it also means your cards and coins don't get wet, or your packet trick doesn't get ranch dressing on it. This is a class item that provides you your own performing space, and at a new low price, is a great investment for the restaurant performer. |

Hi Scott.
A couple questions about your THF. First, what actually comes with the THF? The web page has the following note in bold: "Please note that you are paying only for the bracket--the pad (top) is not included. Because you mount it yourself, you can very cheaply make your own customsized surface" And secondly, what are the dimensions of the surface? The first question might seem a bit simple but "a bracket" could mean just the hardware portion that attaches to the table. Does the part that purchasers must make themselves only mean the pad on top? Or the entire board/work surface? I hope my questions aren't out of place, but I have twice in the past few months purchased something that had typical vague descriptions (that seem to be endemic only to magic accessories!) and received something entirely different than what I expected. And of course such items are commonly non-returnable. I understand the reason that magic accessories are often listed this way but it can sometimes mean buying "blind"! Thanks! Jim |

Hi Jim,
The THF is a way to mount a performing surface to a table such that you only take up a less than 1-inch strip of the table but still have the full-sized surface. It is adjustable almost instantly to range from table tops of 1'4" up to four inches. It goes on and off the table in less than one second. You get this mounting bracket, which is different from anything else on the market. It is not a broom clip type of attachment. Nothing clips on to the table--it works in any entirely different way, and is hundreds of times stronger and more sturdy than those clip-attached items. I did a trick where I produced 2 16-pound bowling balls and set them on my pad, supported by the THF. It didn't even wobble. I challenge any other table attachment to beat that! Further, I weigh 220 pounds. I sat on my board attached to the table with the THF. The table started to tip over, but the THF held firm. The dimensions of the surface are entirely up to you. You put your own top on and your own surface. I have had a briefcase attached to one. I've used an antique silverware case. I've used a 12 by 16 inch board with carpet glued on it, covered with pool table baize. I've used some of the marketed pads and tables attached to it. The only requirement is that the surface must either be able to hold a wood screw or let you put a bolt through it. For, say, a Mikame close up stage, you wood need to glue a small piece of wood to the bottom and then screw the THF onto that. For the briefcase and silverware case, I drilled holes through the bottom and then put bolts down through (with fender washers on the inside of thee) and attached the nuts to the underside of the THF. So you put whatever you want on it. I do not provide a surface with it, and I'll tell you why: Everyone wanted something different: a box with a drawer, or a case with a lid that opened, or a different color of surface, different dimensions, different kinds of wood, etc. I am not a carpenter. So I provide the THF, and you put whatever you want on it. One fellow took the top off of a wooden TV tray and uses that, although that would be much too large for my uses. At its most basic, you just get a piece of 1/2" plywood cut to the size of your close up pad and screw the THF to that. Some guys have found ready made shelving that is finished in veneer and is either 8, 10, or 12 inches deep by 12 inches wide. The choice is yours, and of course you can move the THF to different tops / cases, as it is only a matter of removing four screws or bolts. Plus, it comes with a lifetime (that would be MY lifetime) guarantee! I hope that answers your questions. Regards, Scott

As you can see above in my last post here, I used a silverware case I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond.
I am also thinking of switching it to an artists case I found at Micheal's because it is a better size for me and it looks like it will hold my stuff better.

BTW, Doug Ries at Flip Disc Productions makes a nice wood close-up stage that has a very nice look and a great performing surface that goes beautifully with the THF. You will need to either use pretty short wood screws or glue a small piece of 1/2" plywood to the bottom of it to attache the THF. Looks and works beautifully--it's a real quality item. You can find it along with a number of other high-quality products from Doug here:
http://www.flipdisc.com/magic_products.htm Alec (slyhand) sent me a photo of the case he put on his THF--it looks great! Alec, maybe you could post your photo here if it's not too much trouble. Posted: Jan 1, 2010 9:45pm ----------------------------- One more thing: I get a lot of questions about shipping. If you live in the USA, I take care of the shipping. Anywhere else, you'll have to pay for the shipping. You can easily find out how much that is online. The packaged THF weighs about 3.5 - 3.75 pounds. Just Google for USPS shipping rates to your country from the USA for that weight. For some countries, it gets pretty expensive, but there's honestly nothing I can do about that. I can't very well pay $35 out of my pocket to ship an item for which I'm only charging $49.99--I'd lose money on that deal. However, if you consider that until recently almost every THF sold went for $75 plus shipping, you're still getting a pretty good deal. My bad--I didn't see it.
Posted: Jan 13, 2010 7:04am ----------------------------- For a limited time, I will give purchasers of the THF $25 worth of their choice of Guinn ebooks from my site free! Just send me an email when you order your THF, telling me what book or books you would like. I can't afford to do this for long, so act quickly!

I really hope people are taking you up on this. I bought this at full price a year ago and I have gotten way more than my moneys worth from it. Now it's like getting it less than half price.
P.S. Anyone who is going to get this deal, I recommend getting "Not Your Ordinary Card Tricks" ebook as part of your freebie. The "Daley Double" is one I do every night and get wild reactions from it.
