Wow! I remember my first trip to a Magic Shop, I live really close to NYC and I was always hanging out at the magic shops there. The magician that worked in one shop was a huge inspriation to me and taught me a lot of stuff. But next time you go shopping for magic stuff, I recommend picking up Bill Tarr's "Now you see it now you don't". It is a terrific book, it doesn't only teach cards but all sorts of sleights. Also I would pick up a packet effect. Smile

First buy books over Tricks as they hold more value for money. The books along with a few DVD's and videos are your best bet:

General Magic Books.

Mark Wilson’s Complete Course in Magic
The Tarbell Course in Magic (1-8)
Amateur Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay
Bill Tarr's Now You See It, Now You Don't
The Magic Book" by Harry Lorayne
Magic for Dummies' by David Pogueman

Money Magic:

New Modern Coin Magic-Bobo
Roth's Expert Coin Magic Made Easy 1,2,3

Card Magic:

Roberto Giobbi Card College Volumes (1-4)
Royal Road to Card Magic- Jean Hugard & Fredrick Braue
Close up Card Magic-Lorayne
Tom Ogden's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Magic Tricks
Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles Videos (1-3)

Magic Theory:

Magic and Showmanship, by Hennings Nelms
Real World Magic by Jerry Macgregor
Strong Magic by Darwin

That should do for starters, and if you wont more bang for your buck read my artical at http://www.online-visions.com/other/0401budget.html
