Just received this and I'm very impressed with it. The routine is well thought out, including the props/gimmicks. For those of you who have purchased this and actually perform this on a regular on going basis in a close-up strolling venue, I would like to hear your commments as to any changes you may have made for the "hook-up". Those of you who have this will understand what I mean. Would also appreciate any additional ideas or comments.

I own this and have used it to great effect. I've never used it in my table hopping gigs due to angles, potential mess (Fish jumping out of bowl or klutzy me dropping it...not at all a product fault) and resetting surrounded by prying eyes. I personally use it mostly for street performing and party strolling events that offer a little break and cover for reset.
Don't get me wrong...It's a super routine, the reset is simple and angles aren't all that difficult, but for my personal method of performing and dress while tablehopping, it just isn't practical. Now for someone with a different style, it could be a Huge hit. I'd go into more detail, but to do so would tip the secrets.

Can someone gives a description of this effect?

There's something fishy about Diamond Jim's latest offering!
Jim has been hesitant to release this effect to the magic community for quite some time. After much persuasion, and feeling that this production is unique from all of the others on the market, Jim is finally releasing this close-up miracle. Jim began producing a live fish in a bowl of water in his act in 1997, and since then it has garnered much praise and adoration for the effect! How would you like to walk up to a table, introduce yourself, produce a silk, show it both sides, and from it, produce a fishbowl with live goldfish inside? Amazing, isn't it? Well, with Diamond Jim's "A Little Fishy," it's possible! The gimmick itself is practical for the strolling worker who depends on instant reset, because that's exactly what it does -- instantly resets! The effect makes a grand finale to any routine that you might already perform with an ordinary handkerchief. A LITTLE FISHY comes complete with a fishbowl, the secret revolutionary gimmick, and instructions with a suggested routine (please supply your own goldfish. The fishbowl itself is 2.5 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The gimmick takes up no pocket space whatsoever, completely secures the fish and bowl, and allows the fish to be completely safe at all times. Leave your audiences stunned today with this terrific effect they won't be prepared for! |

That's from Jim's site and is quite accurate. The only things I would add in the vein of truth is that you must wear a jacket. I wear a tight vest in my restaurant gigs - so, it is impractical for me there.
The bowl holds one medium size goldfish or Beta with a low lip. I have had fish jump out if I set the bowl down uncovered. That is a REAL show stopper and not a desired scramble in a restaurant. I also don't like setting things on tables for various reasons, so it needs to be reset immediately or placed out of sight into a jacket pocket in my case. The same thing holds for producing the bowl to find the fish floating on the surface. Not, in my opinion, a desired effect in a food service establishment. That said, reset is simple and incredibly easy if your angles are clear. If those issues work for you, it's a killer effect; well worth experimenting with!

Like Skip, I have only used this as a one time effect at a show. It has always gotten a great reaction. I have never tried to use it more than once in a show or event. The last time I used it was at an aquaculture coordinators meeting. It killed. Great trick

Thanks for your kind words guys. In the instructions I do also suggest a method to produce the fish & bowl without wearing a jacket.

I've been performing this for quite some time now, and it always gets a great reaction. I do not use this in restaurants, but I use it when working in bars all the time. I do not use the "hook-up" provided with the trick. I do wear a jacket when performing so that isn't the issue. The "hook-up" didn't work well for me, so I choose an alternative method....works great. Thanks Jim for making your idea available.

Patrick can I ask what method you use instead of the hook up? I have never performed this just because the bowl would always "detach" when full of water. I never even tried with a fish for obvious reasons!

Do you have to use the supplied fish bowl? Or can you use Little Fishy to produce, for example, a glass of water?
|

As long as what you are wanting to produce has the exact same size opening as the fist bowl it might work.

Thom, this particular gimmick is rather limited to the specific fishbowl or, as nonvpro said, an item with an identical opening - However, once you purchase and examine the effect it wouldn't be too difficult to duplicate and modify a custom gimmick to fit nearly anything.
Strength of the glass walls and weight are issues - so a full glass of water or a delicate wine glass are probably not feasible. This is my assumption - experimentation and tweaking could prove me wrong. A shot glass or hardy brandy snifter is definitely possible. It really is an ingenious concept and well worth experimenting with.

I bought a few realistic gel goldfish from an on-line toystore. If you produce the Little Fishy bowl with the gel rubber fish and keep the water swirling, it looks almost as good as a real fish, with plenty of motion in the fins - and there's no risk that it will start doing the backstroke at an awkward time. Plus, if it turns out that you're performing for PETA sympathizers, they will appreciate your obvious ecological sensitivity.
The same store also sold small rubber fish skeletons, which can be a good, not-so-sensitive gag. They're small enough to hide in your mouth, so you can produce the bowl, pop the rubber fish in your mouth to the horror of the kiddies, make some chewing motions, then slowly pull the bones out. Mmmm.... sushi! Also, here's some fish-themed silks that work nicely with the Little Fishy routine: http://www.practical-magic.com/index.php......temid=26

The descriptions I've read so far in the thread seem pretty accurate. I purchased the effect a while back as I do a lot of strolling magic while wearing a coat and liked the idea of a live fish production. I would mention, though, that the safety of the fish is not 100% secure. I had a good few practice rounds with this after bringing it home from the local magic shop but before I could perform this effect once I had the bowl twist off of the gimmick and shatter on the floor of a busy restaurant. Needless to say there were some funny looks exchanged. The betta I was using survived (luckily I had a plastic spare container to put him in), but the bowl did not.
With caution, this gimmick is do-able, but you have to constantly mind the fact that any quick body rotations could cause the bowl to detach - and when you have an item that shatters with one good drop you're looking at one absent minded movement ruining your equipment. I have yet to find a replacement bowl, but I've emailed Diamond Jim to see if he can narrow my search. Kudos to the design of the product, but I wish I would have gotten a chance to perform it! |

I mentioned in a previous post that I perform this routine all the time, but I don't use the hook-up provided. It was unreliable....twice detaching and breaking. The fish survived both instances. But had to buy the trick twice more than I wanted to. I'll share my solution to this problem.
I simply keep the fish bowl in my outer left jacket pocket. I've played with holdouts, holsters, ball droppers, etc. and the simplest answer has worked the best. That's really it. It's small enough to not create a large bulge. No different than final loads of a chop cup routine. The routine I use this with is a derivitive of a Gary Kurtz routine from his "Let's Get Flourious" tape many years ago. The routine has evolved into something unrecognizeable to the original (called Copper/Silver Continuation". At the end of the coin/napkin routine, I do a body turn when producing a 10" coin from the napkin. While doing this, I steal the bowl from the pocket. As the coin is taken/given to the spectator, I bring the bowl forward and drape the napkin over the bowl for the production. Hope this helps to give you some ideas as how to work this into a routine. patrick |
