Dear ARNOMAGIE,
StratoSphere has a kind of side ways flip box that might serve. Final load in a square circle? Sounds incongruously funny to me. Good luck. I'd love to find a Magical way to produce my Contact Juggling Ball. You've got me thinking. -Mary Mowder |

What size orange? Very small could be palmed and produced via flash paper, ala Ammar. Med size can be produced using pendulum principle. Temple screen would work, as would the method using a shoebox. Orange on thread attached to box lid. Box is opened by tilting lid. Look in Tarbell, Mark Wilson for other ways.

Is "Turn It Round" still on the market? Square Cube is on a small piece of wood. Cover the block and then remove cloth and it change from red to blue. Do this several times. Finally, lift the cloth and show it round, an orange is setting on the piece of wood. I believe Mak-Magic made it at one time as well as Supreme Magic, originally it was a Fabjance Magic effect.
This is a good effect to produce a bowl of Oranges. It will require a small table 7 Bowl as well as the device. |

Are you familiar with the Chinese Egg Bag (with the mat)? You would have to make a simple holding device for the orange that would slip off, or detach later. Shouldn't be hard to do. Minimal props. Not for surrounded performance, but good angles for theater-style seating. You could even use a piece of paper in place of the mat.

Try my "Tangerine Box" from The Wizards' Journal #16. Not only can you produce an orange, but you can produce it with someone's vanished ring inside, if you want.

I have one that I really like, but unfortunately I don't think it's available any more. It's called The Fruit Box by Anton Corradin. Why it has that name, I don't know because it doesn't even involve a box. It's like a sketch pad but with thick plastic sheets instead of paper so it will last forever if you take care of it. It has all kinds of different fruit showing as you flip through the pad. Then you have a volunteer to call stop as you are flipping visibly through the pad. When they stop, you show them that they stopped on the orange. Then you tear the piece out of the pad and roll it into a tube and when you shake the tube, a real orange falls out of it. Then when you open up the piece of paper again, all that's left is the stem and leaves instead of the orange being on the piece of (plastic) paper that you tore out. I purchased it at Steven's Magic Emporium about 7 or 8 years ago.

It was marketed by E.Loyd Enochs as "Assisto" and was a modified Shower of Sweets bag. It's a very old device, but a real miracle when performed with panache and it's rarely seen today. I think I still have the smaller size bag that Charlie Miller gave me about 30 years ago...

I have an Assisto and just got the original directions. John Daniels and J P Jacksone helped me at the history Conference understand the working.
I am thinking about making some of them again. Richard

Assisto, last advertised in Genii Magazine in the mid 1966.
Richard Hughes, are you going to make this product for sale? |

Orange productions have always fascinated me for some odd reason.
I always heard about Kirk Kirkham (I think it was him) doing the orange production into a glass bowl. I purchased an old Abbott's Orange Classic, and always wanted to do it. I don't have a freaking clue as to the context I would use it in, however! Wish there was more documentation on how/why the past greats did it. Some top flight guys had it and similar things in their act, so it must have been for a reason. Richard or others, do you guys have further insight? I played around for quite a bit of time with the double load shower of sweets. Again it's like a context thing. How the hell does that get put in context in todays venues without handkerchiefs, etc... Why must I be such a historical dilettante :-(. Born in the wrong era I guess. How does the Assisto differ from the Orange Classic (talk about primitive) or the shower of sweets? Keith

The Assisto is merely touched to the bowl and the items are released. To the audience, the effect is the same as shower of sweets.
Yes, I am seriously considering making a few of the Assisto type units up. I have couple of things I may want to change on it. Richard

Richard, I would be interested in a original design with a nice looking cloth, for Assisto.
As for a reason, how about doing a Bill/Card to Orange Routine, and say to the audience, "You may pick an orange from", "ONE OF THESE". For the sweets, speaking to audience, "You have been so gracious", "Here is a little token of my appreciation for all of you coming today". Here is my Reason: As a real Magician with special powers, I can pull cards from the air, and coins, Cigarettes, thimbles and birds. I do not know why these items come to me, but they do. When asked to perform for an audience; demonstrating some of these feats, I honor their request. I do not want the members of the audience to get bored, so I change things around a little. I can make a bowl of orangers or candy sweets or water appear while holding a cloth/foulard, again very strange, but the people who hired me seems to like what I show them. I have had these powers since birth, I do not ask why I was gifted with these limited strange powers, but I accept them. My powers have never hurt anyone, thank goodness, they have not taken a different path, ever. People come up to me after a demonstration and ask where did the oranges come from? I just tell them it is MAGIC. I really do not want them to think these unusual powers really exist. They may freak out or something, or call the Government. After 50 years of showing my limited abilities, they still enjoy the simple things I show them in a short period of time. I will continue to do so until I am no longer asked for a demonstration. This is my Secret, please do not tell anyone, I have these limited abilities. Thanks. |

You can also adapt "Dove from Silk" to a orange production or a "Square Tube" to produce a large number of oranges.

Various dealers that make feather flower bouquets and botanias have made a blooming orange tree which visibly grows oranges which are then "picked" and shown to be real oranges. It's a beautiful effect, and the oranges can be tossed into the audience to be enjoyed by spectators. Once could be loaded for a card or bill in orange effect.

I make a blooming Orange tree that blooms 9 real oranges. I actually have one unit completed in stock.
It is also something that is not seen often. One reason the Westgate bowl is not seen often is that the required bowl that fits that effect has been discontinued. So if you break the bowl, you are out of business unless you can find a used one on ebay. Richard
