Locked in a Room without Coins by Craig Petty - £15
World Magic Shop 2009 Review by Mark Waddington LOCKED IN A ROOM WITHOUT COINS – available from http://www.worldmagicshop.com Craig Petty is back and this time he’s left his coins at home. Featuring ten killer routines designed to be used in the real world to real people. Most of the routines require just a regular pack of cards and any moves required are fully covered in the ‘sleights section’. This is material that you WILL use; all routines have been tried, tested and perfected over the last ten years. Get ready to take your card magic to a new level. The Lance Burton Appreciation Trick An anytime anywhere miracle that combines a super visual wild card with a card under watch kicker. The best part is that all you need is a regular deck and you are good to go. Double Sandwich A KILLER version of the sandwich plot that combines multiple card revelations and transpositions in a flurry of magical moments Essence Deal This routine is pure eye candy combining super visual colour changes and flash paper. It has been described by many top pros as the perfect restaurant trick. EZ Waltzer An easy to do version of Doc Eason’s ‘Anniversary Waltz’ with a borrowed deck of cards – no gaffs required. Pickpocket A super commercial presentation for ‘Card In Wallet’. A signed card vanishes from a spectator’s wallet and appears in another spectator’s pocket. Shoeperman This routine is a master class in body loading. Three cards are selected and signed. The first card appears under a spectator’s watch. The second card appears in the spectator’s own pocket. The final card is found folded up in the spectator’s own shoe. An absolute reputation maker. Monster Opener A KILLER combination of Peter Kane’s ‘Wild Card’ and Dai Vernon’s ‘Travellers’ with a kicker that you have to see to believe. This routine has been one of the most talked about items in Craig’s lectures for years. Sandwich With a Kick A three part sandwich routine that gets more and more impossible with each phase. Features an ending that will literally stop the show. The Marker This routine has been a standout piece in Craig’s act for years. Combining the brilliance of Alex Elmsley’s ‘Between the Palms’ with a hilarious super commercial presentation this effect is one you are guaranteed to love. BONUS ROUTINE – PHOTOGENIC This routine was in Craig’s Award Winning Competition Act. Originally due to be released as a stand alone product we have chosen to include it on this DVD as an added bonus. A signed selected card is found using a ‘magical camera’. As a result the remainder of the pack becomes completely blank and is given to the audience to examine. Review Wow, what a great DVD. This, by far has to be Craig’s most commercial DVD to date – a fantastic DVD for the professional worker. Everything on the DVD is relatively simple in plot and presentation, and uses little more than a regular deck of cards (with the exception of a blank faced card or two), and best of all, there is hardly any previous set up to the routines meaning you can jump straight into the effect should the right situation arise. All of the necessary sleights used are explained in full on the DVD, meaning you don’t have to go trawling through your library to find that one little move – however there isn’t that much knuckle busting stuff on here! (a DL, a card fold, side steal etc is what most of the routines use). All of the routines on the DVD have been properly thought through, and refined over many thousands of performances to ensure you can go out into the trenches with the material on this DVD, knowing that you are fully armed with magic that is guaranteed to get great reactions, every time. A couple of effects that stand out on the DVD to me are “Shoeperman” and “Double sandwich”. Shoeperman is a fantastic “put-pocket” type of effect, with the fantastic phase of a chosen card appearing inside the SPECTATORS shoe!! Double sandwich is exactly as it sounds – 2 different cards are found in 2 separate card sandwiches at the same time. Great thinking, and easy to do. The bonus on the DVD, “Photogenic” is a great commercial routine which was set to be released on its own (they should have released it separately I think!). The beauty with this routine is that the majority of the work is done before you even start performing the effect! My favourite routine off the DVD has to be “Essence Deal”. You will have to purchase something else for the routine, but WMS sell them so you won’t have any problems sourcing the extras. The routine combines super visual card magic with fire in a way that’s bound to get gasps. It’s EASY to do, and I was out working this within days of learning it- and getting killer reactions. The visual aspect of actually taking the ink off a selected card is great. This will definitely be appearing regularly in my working set. Overall this is a great DVD for the commercial Walk-around Magician; I’m almost certain anyone who watches this DVD will find at least a couple of routines that they will want to introduce into their set. I would score this DVD as a 9/10. It only loses a point because I feel that the production quality itself wasn’t brilliant – at points the recording was grainy and the sound was slightly hit and miss at times, however I feel in general this is a small point and I only include it in this review to be complete. Mr. Waddington, please don't take offense to the following question, but do know Craig Petty?
The reason I ask is that on another thread I questioned the strength of the tricks on this DVD because the ad copy was so over the top. Things like "Killer material" "reputation Makers", "guaranteed to get great reactions, every time", "an ending that will literally stop the show". I had hoped for reviews from people that didn't know the creator and that actually bought the DVD. In your review you said "All of the routines on the DVD have been properly thought through, and refined over many thousands of performances to ensure you can go out into the trenches with the material on this DVD, knowing that you are fully armed with magic that is guaranteed to get great reactions, every time" That sounded like over the top ad copy. I guess someone could have 10 tricks that they performed 1000's of times over 5 years, but it is kind of stretching things. Was that a claim on the DVD itself? I hope I did not offend you by asking the question. If I did, I am very sorry. The DVD just showed up on magic sites and your review prompted me to ask the question. The demo of the DVD that is on magic sites doesn't show a full routine. Just flashes of moves set to music. The ad copy is all you have to go by and with the claims it has, I'd like to see some solid reviews before ordering. I only do tricks for friends once in awhile, so to have tricks that aren't knuckle busters and use a regular deck that are reputation makers would be fantastic. I just don't want to get the DVD and not have it not live up to its claims.

Firstly, thanks for the review Mark. I am glad you are enjoying the DVD.
Also thanks to you Joe for your comments. I would like to address a few of the things that you said. I don't know if you have seen any of my material before but I stand by my reputation when it comes to any DVD's that I put out. One thing that has been constantly said about my material is that all of it is strong and commercial. Now I agree that not everyone can like everything on a DVD, I seriously doubt that if you had the DVD you would use every routine. However, the feedback I am having has shown to me that different people are liking different routines. This tells me there is something on there for everyone. If you look at my past trailers for other DVD's I have always including one of the effects in full as part of the trailer. The problem with this is it can make the trailer very long (almost 9 minutes with my BLANK DVD). So I thought we thought we would try something different with this DVD and just show some clips. Regarding the ad copy being over the top, the thing with ad copy is that it is there to sell the DVD. Having said that I stand by the statement that the material is killer. This is my first all card DVD with a regular pack and I put material on that I use all the time - there is no filler from my point of view. My advise is if you like my other DVD's there is a very good chance you will like this one. If you have never seen any of my material before check out my other DVD trailers on You Tube as you will see lots of footage of me performing and this should help make your mind up. The one thing I hope you agree with is the value for money. The DVD runs 3 1/2 hours, there are ten routines including the closer in my Blackpool Competition Act which a lot of people told me they want to learn and there is a full sleight section as a bonus. I cannot think of many DVD;s that have been brought out recently that have that amount of footage for just £15. Anyway, I look forward to your review if you buy the DVD and if I can answer any more questions just let me know. Craig |

Craig- That is a very fair and sensible reply. I was a little on the fence on this one, as there are so many other good products recently come to market, but your refreshing honesty on marketing has convinced me to give it a try.

Hi Mr. Petty! Thank you very much for taking the time to post. Mark Waddington, who did the review above, posted in another thread that he was sent a preview copy of your DVD, so that answered my question.
Maybe instead of having us watch Youtube video from your other DVDS, you could post a performance from "Locked in a room without coins". I think every DVD has it's own theme or energy and seeing an actual performance from the DVD we're considering buying would be more helpful. If you don't have time, we can wait for reviews. Thanks again for posting. JM

Thanks for your comments Joe
I always send review copies out to people when I bring out a new DVD as I like there is be as many reviews as possible available for people to read. Unfortunately World Magic Shop are snowed under at the moment and so I doubt they will have time to post a performance video of any of the routines. I do however have one review copy of the DVD left to send out. Let me send that DVD out to you and you can review it on the Café when you have watched it. That way you get to see the material first hand and you can let everyone else know what you think. I always have (and always will) stand by the quality of my material and each DVD I put out I try to put as much 'Bang For The Buck' as possible. PM me your address and I will send it out to you straight away Hope this helps you and everyone else on the Café Craig |

A nice resolution!
I was impressed by the polite / respectful way in which Joe made his point, and Craig's offer is a good one. I look forward to reading Joe's review. I have brought a few Craig Petty releases (Blank, Split happens, Flipped out), and would agree that there is definitely plenty of 'bang' for the very reasonable asking price. While I do not know Craig, I bumped into him at Blackpool, and despite it being about 3am, found him to be extremely helpful & friendly. I'll probably try to pick this up after Christmas. Charlie |

Mr. Petty, thanks again for taking the time out of your schedule to come here and write and explain how things work. It's very interesting.
I GREATLY appreciate your offer to watch and view the DVD, but I don't perform. I'm not what you'd call a talented hobbyist. Magic is just a passionate hobby in my life. So, I respectfully decline son the offer. Please know that I'm very grateful that you did offer. I think a review from me wouldn't be much help to anyone since I only perform for friends and family on rare occasions. I do try to post n DVDS or tricks I've bought, but they are just passing comments ( Loved it, liked it, didn't care for it types of thoughts ) not detailed reviews. Will "Locked in a room without coins" be reviewed in Genii or Magic? It might be best to have a working magician do a review than a school teacher;-) Good wishes, Joe

Talk about an unusual thread!
Joe, I have been performing part time for a few years now (for pay), and would guess that the majority of people (potential customers) on the Café are hobbyists / part timers like you and I. Based on the clear & honest way you have posted here, I would certainly be interested in reading your (potential) review. Nearly anyone who is experienced will know that multiple gaffs / complex setups etc will be more impractical for a strolling gig than FASDIU stuff (obviously a generalisation), but will Shoeperman pass the 'wife test'? Did the Monster Opener use five jiggle half pass pop out moves? Like I said, I for one would welcome your review! Regards, Charlie |

Charlie, thank you very much. I hope I didn't denigrate hobbyists in my wording ( I think Larry Jennings a Plumber. lol ). Hobbyists account for the bulk of new magic bought, so we're vital to the industry.
I'm not even sure if you can give an honest review if you don't pay for a DVD or trick. You might think you are, but you might also feel obligated to be more kind instead of impartial. I know quite a bit ( working knowledge ). Executing is a different story. But I think I have a good eye for tricks that are good and ones that might be good, but are poorly presented. Things like that. I do think there is a difference in posting you like a trick or DVD. Maybe even mentioning things you didn't care for. But to do an actual review is a big responsibility. On The Café I read a glowing or poor review and then a month later find out the person has never performed a single trick, or is very young, etc. It's not that I feel they can't have input, but to do a review of someones work, I think, takes someone with more experience. Mr. Petty is a professional Magician and I'm sure I'd like the DVD, but I was looking for reviews that went into detail. I know it's not a $100 DVD. But I don't buy Magic as much as I used to in the past. I'm a little more careful with my spending the last few months, so I'm actually using reviews to help me decide. I'd rather support the creator and spend my money on their product if the reviews warrant it. JM

Joe, some of the best magicians in the world are not professional. People like Guy Hollingsworth and John Bannon have never been professional.
Your opinion matters more than you would like as the majority of people reading these forums aren't professional either. They would find your review very useful. You know what constitutes a good effect and likewise when something is not so good. You know when an effect is not practical versus an effect where there is not set up and the mechanics are fairly simple. If you change your mind I would love to send you a review copy of the DVD just ket me know. I am sure that the Café population would benefit from your input. And from a purely selfish point of view if I can introduce another person to my work so much the better! Speak soon Craig |

If I get one trick that I'll actually use from a DVD, it's pretty rare - I have 100's of them and there is a only a very small percentage that contain material I will actually use. This DVD is one of them! As usual with Craig's releases, this is all extremely commercial material that Craig has used in the real-world. I'll be very surprised if anybody doesn't find at least one routine that they want to use. Highly recommended. Iain. |

Just watching through this now, and I can tell you my initial thoughts. Firstly there isn't one bit of fluff in the advertisements, the routines are all commercial and fun. Craig does have a knack for creating some great magic that is perfect for the working professional, and as one myself I can see myself performing and playing around with these routines.
In particular I am really fond of Shoeperman, a cracking and pretty simple routine that will fry spectators, take one deck of cards add a sprinkle of presentation and side helping of balls and you have a great routine here, a real reputation maker. Essence deal, this is a great routine! You show a spectator a routine where by you make a selected card go blank and you offer to so it in slow motion so they have a chance to figure it out. This is where the routine takes a turn for the bizarre and becomes very off the wall for the spectators, yet it all has a sort of logical presentation. EZ Waltz, this is probably the only waltz type routine I would perform apart from my own Cold and Lonely routine. It has a great presentation involving the spectators, and has multiple phases that aren't impossible by any means to pull off. And of course the routine ends in the familiar ending of the signatures being fused together onto one card. I particularly like this as no gaffs are used so if you find out randomly that a couple are celebrating their anniversary or some similar occasion you are set to perform this cracking routine. Pickpocket is a well structured routine that has all the feel of body loading but has none of it, so for people interested in this type of magic, this routine would be a great place to start. There are also a couple of nice kickers with this routine that will entertain any audience. Photogenic, this is a very well structured routine and has a quirky presentation. A performance piece in itself, I can see why Craig performed this in his Close up competition routine. It has a baffling WTF moment that reminds me of the feeling of 'I have just fallen into a black hole and am disappearing.........' that your spectators get when performing Sankey's great Paperclipped routine. All in all so far Craig, in the words of the Muppets - Startler and Waldorph: I think it is rubbish. Particularly poor. Well it is ok. There were some bits I actually liked. In actual fact I have quite enjoyed it so far. There are some great routines in here. Definitely worth the money, in fact it was GREAT! BRAVO! Woo hoo! Thanks Craig, you melting pot of strangeness sent from beyond to spew immense bucket loads of sleights and routining for us, the mere wannabe strangers! Ben Williams |

A very busy working magician by the name of Darren James has asked me to put on his review of Locked in a Room Without Coins. He is having trouble getting on the Café. I thought it might help with people that are still considering the product. As normal any questions just let me know.
Review by Darren James (aka DK the Magician) LOCKED IN A ROOM WITHOUT COINS – available from http://www.worldmagicshop.com Ok I’ve already mentioned my views on Craig’s ability as a coin guy, in fact I rate him as one of the countries leading coin guys at the present moment. This DVD is just card material, (“Just” not being the correct word as there some very strong material). Now some negatives, the performance pieces are not great, I would rather have seen this material in real world performances, now I know how hard it is to do that but it does let the DVD down as there is some strong material however the reactions in the performance sections don’t reflect this sadly. Also the order on the DVD is not the same as the back cover, no idea why and it does not impact the viewing pleasure but if for any reason this would cause you an issue I thought I would mention it (you weirdo LOL). Now my only negative comment is made now to the material. Most of these routines are classified as FASDIU routines (from a shuffled deck in use). This means these routines are great for workers, no complex set up or stacks. If you work in the trenches you understand what I mean. This does mean the material is of value and not just pipe dreams. A collection of Craig’s approach to some of the classics of card magic The Lance Burton Appreciation Trick – This is great trick, nice touches and very powerful card magic. This is one of off the DVD that is going get added to my repertoire, some nice changes and lots of magic. Double Sandwich – I’m not a fan of sandwich effects, just me however this one has some nice touches going to play with this one. Essence Deal – this is the trick that sold me the DVD, Craig showed me and I knew this was worth getting. You do need to have some flash cards (flash paper with cards printed on it) and a blank faced card. EZ Waltzer – if you don’t have method for doing this effect then this routine is worth checking out, and even if like me you do there some nice touches Craig has that can be added to any routine. Pickpocket – My favourite, lots of magic in a simple routine, you need a card to wallet to perform this routine (most of us have several of these due to our obsession with wallets). I’m going to drop the blank cards, which will make this a powerful FASDIU routine. Shoeperman – another routine that I liked, some great magic having done some body loads with spectators I know how powerful these effects are, and again no set up but you do need to be comfortable with audience management. Monster Opener – lots of magic going on here in this routine, joker changes to all chosen cards one at time, cards to pocket and the pool ball kicker. Sandwich with a Kick- Multi phased sandwich routine. The Marker – Using some blanked cards and duplicate cards, a very powerful effect, not sure of the value of getting one card signed out of the three. I do like the thinking to bring in the extra cards which goes to show a real worker thinking. Photogenic - The routine requires another deck of cards, this was going to be released separately as a trick deck. You could make this up and in fact most card guys will have all the required cards already. Will take some work, even the audience reacted to this one and I understand why. This does require set, and you need to replace a card each time you perform it. The magic is worth the effort. Comments Loved some of the discussions with Russell during the explanations, as some good points came up during these conversations. Craig has proven he is also an outstanding card guy also, not to mention looking slim. He credits all the moves, as well as teaches them in-depth on the DVD in a section on its how. This is a very nice touch as a card guy I hate watching an explanation where the magician feels he needs to explain ever move (selfish I know, but hate me if you like). |

I am a huge Craig Petty fan, this new DVD lives up to my expectations.
My favorites. 1) The Marker, I love the way the routine builds upon the spectator's I.O.U. Very cleaver. 2) Monster Opener, this routine could just about stand alone as a complete show, showlette (little show) I love the ending. I often use this Bannon style. 3) Essence Deal, again I really like the structure of this effect, although I never use flash paper, I am very interested in giving this one a whirl, the flash paper here make sense, I like it! I found Craig to be very funny, and entertaining throughout the performances. The spectators however, were a bit dry. Overall, thumbs up for me.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.
