Hi guys, just wondering which one do you personally prefer between black deck and white/ regular deck. We know that somehow black decks are on their hype right now, or at least in my country, but we can spell some popular black deck such as black tiger deck, black raider deck, black ghost deck, shadow master, arcane black. So I was wondering what do you guys prefer wether the black deck or the white regular deck?
Some example of Black Deck VS White Regular Deck : - Black ghost deck VS White Ghost deck - Arcane black VS Arcane white - Midnight karnival VS Karnival deck (you can see the pic through the link) In my own opinion I would prefer the black one, since its simply looks more elegant and unique, you can perform differently using the black deck. So guys what do you think? |

I'm just getting into cards, both magic and manipulation, so forgive a newbie's opinion. I like the white Ghost decks for effects--I just like the look of them. I like the black decks I have for flourishing--they look cool. For me, either "normal" or white decks are easier for my audience (read: my husband) to recognize instantly. The black decks look elegant to me, but I can see where they're difficult for your audience to recognize: "Is that a seven? No, wait! It's a nine!"
As always, your mileage may vary and I'll be interested to see what the more experienced people have to say! |

I prefer regular cards with a white background simply because my audience will be more familiar with them. If I pull out a weird black deck they'll suspect gimmicks even when the effect is completely impromptu.

Though they seem to appeal to the young'uns, a lot of whom are very adept with cards and do some nice flourishes, etc., with them. An unhip old git like me would look daft producing a fancy black deck of cards, I imagine! Also, I like to have regular and gaffed decks all of which are in regular Bicycle stock, switching gaffs in and out, etc. I imagine there's a premium on gaffed black decks of all types; at the very least they seem less easy to obtain than regular Bicycle gaffs. |

You definitely right about this, the black deck usually does not come out with the gaff deck along with it. though I know there's ghost gaff deck (a gaff for the custom bicycle deck), but so far I couldn't find gaff mate for pure black deck, CMIIW. |

Like many post here all I can say is that it depends.
I like regular cards. Perhaps if I was into flourishes or bizarre magick I might use other than regular decks. |

I don't paint myself in the corner with these restricting conditions of cards or high nose perceptions. Get monster skills and you could wow em' with a Dora Explorer deck. Becaaaause when you can do nifty things with other folk"s deck of cards lying around their house (provided it's not in complete fubar condition), You can kill em' fillet em' and put em' in the frying pan. And if your using "good" cards of your own, wellll, the universe just opens up for you.

Plus I would like to see the data and know what polling is given to specs right after their shows that provides these often expressed views on everyday folks being suspect of a black deck or any other deck deviating from a standard bicycle deck. Such dogma assumptions and beliefs. Look if it comes from USPCC but it just so happens to be commissioned by Ellusionist or Theory 11 or Walgreens or it's licensed. They ALL rock! more fun for eveyone. It's card's used from playing crazy 8's to ACCAN, not re-mapping DNA.

Black cards tend to show white wrinkles after a while with use, but I love collecting cards. Black decks vs white decks, (hmmmm). That all depends for me on the art work, and how more pronounced the art work is with the black or white background. Some art work looks better with a white background and some look better with a black background.
When I perform card tricks using IET, I tend to lean more towards using black decks which hides the IET better.

I love the fancy decks - for the looks... but only use normal (looking) standard bicycle
cards. I want people to never see something that looks like a magicians only prop. The cards are cool though. |

For me, it has to be regular bikes.. I'm not a snazzy guy, so pulling out a snazzy deck would look like I'd mugged a young'un and stolen their cards lol.
But seriously, they're just more accessbile, readily available in all your favourite gaffs.. what's not to love? |

I really think it depends on what you do. Let me explain. From my experience (only 6 years, I found out that people often think you have a gimmick deck if the deck your using is black. There not used to see a black deck. Therfore, the cards must have something special about them, at least in their mind it must have.
This is just my opinion, but I prefer to go with a normal red or blue deck when I perform for laymen. The more "normal" everything looks to them, the more they will get in a loose and comfort state of mind. They won't be in a "what the heck is that deck" mode. Depending on the routine, I might use special deck. For a darker presentation of some kind or for a mentalism effect, I sometimes use a black back deck (with white faces), a Heirloom deck or a kaleidoscope deck. I think the black cards are pretty cool with card manipulations. Anyway, all I'm saying is that for me, the least attention the spectator have on the cards, the easier it is for me. |

I prefer a regular deck because the spectators are used to it.

The first question I'll ask is why do you think magicians do card tricks? I mean they could be a stack of anything made of some kind of card stock and do many of the same tricks with them. But why playing cards?
The answer is that playing are something everyone knows about and are familiar with. It's something that just about everyone knows how to play a game or two with. It's something that everyone knows enough about to be able to know what's in that deck of cards without having to check them (52 cards, a couple jokers, hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds, 13 of each suit, red & black cards, etc...). One look at a deck of cards and they instantly know all there is to know about them. Why then would anyone want to use cards that are "abnormal" to what everyone is familiar with? Why would anyone want to show them a deck of cards that are "Different" in any way? If they are different then what they are familiar with then they are no longer an object they know all about right away. It's no longer something they are familiar with and would likely ask to check them out (Because they are now suspicious of them). This in most cases draws attention away from effect and onto objects. That's not where their attention should be. A description of a card trick someone has witnessed should not need to include "He had a black deck of cards". It should simply be, "He did ______ with a deck of cards". There should be no need to describe what the deck of cards looks like because everyone knows what they look like as soon as they hear the word "Deck of cards". That's my thought on this issue. For card collectors they look neat. They can be used for some effects where the color of the cards is the effect (A card magically changes colors). Which says to a spectator that it started out as a "Normal" card (White). Ron Jaxon |

I use a black deck for one (count 'em, one) effect. And I only do that because a certain gimmick blends in better with a black deck than with a normal white deck. Fortunately, for this effect, one can hand out all the props before hand for thorough examination, and again at the end of the trick, so all I need is patter for a reason as to why this deck is black.
I don't think you need polling data to determine that a black deck isn't as "trustworthy" as a normal-looking white deck. All you really need is anecdotal evidence of one jerk in the back shouting out that it's a trick deck to put you off of "odd" looking decks for normal card work. It's ironic, though, that odd-looking decks are actually far more trustworthy than normal bikes. Bill |

If you are into xcm then the custom decks look cool. I do own the ghost deck and the finish is good and they last. For card tricks/sleights the bicycle decks are pretty good. If you wish to practice xcm the tally-ho decks are perfect.

The other night I went to a dinner party. At the party I was asked to do some magic. I asked the host if he had a deck of cards handy. Sure, I had a deck in my pocket, but I wanted the host's deck. He came back with an unopened deck of red bikes. (!!!!) Some high quality card magic later and everyone is "WOW, how did you do that? And with Benjamin's cards! And they were unopened!" Point is, the fact that they were not my cards increased the magic greatly. Another point, lay people go out and buy bikes. They are used to them because that is the deck that they have at home.
