Ninja ring one hand blocked link... is it 50% or 95%... I perform it 95% of the time ... I catch it 50% of time I practice it. Getting better at it though

Misterbill - To paraphrase Maskleyne - if you have a good enough reason to break the rules ;-) go for it
Whole deck or packet matters not, the effect and results matter I like Pop Knot better but go with what your personality fits and wants Nothing is "expected" and we all create our own paths See Denny Haney's lecture notes for "The most important thing is getting them to like you" or Pulp Fiction - "Personality goes a long way" Your show will be better received if they like YOU

Your show will be better received if they like YOU Yes! Also, opening with something very strong is important, it sets the pace for the whole show! Put your weaker effects in the middle of the act. You have a solid list of tricks, I think you will have a lot of fun! If you are having fun, so will the audience! |

You will perform at a friend's party, so a lot of people in the audience you know. Maybe you can do a small mentalist effect, e.g. with cards. You can talk to the audience, call someone by his/her name: 'Caroline, how nice to see you here. Would you be so kind to draw a card out of this fan?' That kind of thing, take the familiarity as an advantage. Make it all cosy as being friends amongst friends. This friendly atmosphere will make sure that the audience is on your hand. The line up of tricks isn't really important anymore, friendship is far more important.

Zebaztian,
I had not been thinking that way but you make a good point. It's not too different than a friend telling a joke among friends. -Mary Mowder |

A good performance is always about atmosphere. A strong effect is bullocks when audience and magician don't have a good time. When there's joy around, the simplest and easiest effect can be so hot and cool! What's easy? The acrobatic cards (three normal cards and two double backers), this is in a regular show a kind of non-trick, but amongst a friendly and sheerful audience, it can be a sure 'Wow'.

The party ended up being moved to Christmas day. There wasn't any booze (whew). And I did the show after dinner in the living room. Angles weren't bad. Here is the set I performed: Ninja ring routine, Used Sudden Deck II to produce a Mental Photography deck, MP routine, Sponge balls routine, Cups & balls, and Newspaper Tear. Everything went without a flaw except the newspaper tear but everyone seemed amazed by it except my wife who spotted my mistake (she knew what to look for). Then I got begged for an encore so I did color monte, NFW, Twisted sisters, and an ACR routine. Everyone was very happy and entertained and I was asked to do it again sometime.
Remember these are very close friends of mine. I have been doing magic now for about three years, but this is the first time I have actually sat down and worked out an act and stood up in front of a group of people to perform.

If it ever comes up again there is an easier to put on an act and have it flow. Start the show and say, "I want to show you something really cool." Then after the effect say "that wasn't it, but check this out". You continue this through your entire performance. That way you don't have to stress yourself out and you can relax and have fun.
I know pros that use this. I know it has been around a long time, and I don't know whom to credit it to. |

To Misterbill,
I'm a latecomer to this thread but I want to congratulate you on the success of your "first" show. I also want to encourage you to really get to work on the Newspaper Tear again if you have not done so. This is a great trick, but can be tricky to do with no flashing. And, we all can have a bad day, so perhaps your difficulty was unusual. But the fact is that you were not satisfied with the way that it went and that means that you may be quite nervous the next time you attempt it. Only a good deal of practice will help that. If you had problems with a flash during one of your initial tears, I will suggest two things. If you follow Gene's instructions, you will have very little lee-way when you do that last vertical tear. Gene does it that way, but he's the absolute master of the trick. Many professionals eliminate one tear which allows a little repositioning of the papers between tears. Even Doug Henning did this. In fact, if you have any video of him doing it, watch closely to see how he moves the papers a bit between tears to give him as much coverage as possible. Second, to practice this part, you don't need to have both packets pre-folded. Just fold the inner packet and save all of the folding time on the outer packet... it's just going to be ripped up anyway. After a run-through, throw away the pieces, refold the now open packet and glue it inside a new outer packet. How much practice do you have to do? Well, that's hard to say, but Doug Henning said that most magicians stop practicing way too soon. Certainly I'm not talking just two or three run-throughs. Maybe 100 is a good target to shoot for. Only you can decide when you feel like you are really on top of it, but err on the side of too much practice, not too little. Here's an approach to routining from Fu Manchu: End with your best/strongest trick. Start with your second best trick, then do your worst, next to worst, etc. building and building to your strong finale. Dennis Loomis
