This is being posted of general interest of my colleagues.
What got you started in magic? And why do you keep doing it? I speak for myself when I say that it was from my first moment of astonishment. It was when I was a young young boy and I saw David Copperfield on tv(I'm still a kid ) and it was all just so beautiful that I had to do this myself. I got a magic kit as a present and I tried to learn all the trick in it. From then on I was hooked, every time I went anywhere I showed my magic, and I loved to get that astonishment from people, and still do. That's what keeps me going, it's those enchanted faces that you see on the girls face when the rabbits have multiplied in her hand, it's the yells you get from the guys when the card shows up somewhere unexpected. But enough about me.. tell me about your reasons PS: Dunno if this is the right forum to post this in.. If not, please forgive me, there are just too many forums to choose from |

We all started because we saw some magicians and figured out that they were holding brilliant secrets which we could use to be recognized by other people for what we are worth.
The only problem is that magic is an art that is easy to do bad and difficult to do well. It's not in the secrets, it's in the acting, the scripting of tricks the understanding of misdirection, in a few word: in the understanding of other people (when we wanted to be understood by them). Now if you don't get discouraged it's a beautiful art. We can always progress. It's also a great community with great masters who's intelligence and experience can be very inspiring and thrilling.

When I was about 6 years old, my father took me to see Harry Blackstone, Sr. I was totally enraptured!
When he did the Vanishing Bird Cage, his presentation was a bit different from his son's. HBSr. would get as many kids on the stage as he could manage. They stretched from his side to the very end of the apron of the stage. I was the last kid on stage left. I went home on a cloud. I had discovered in that moment exactly what I wanted to do with my life. And I did it.

A David Copperfield coloring and activity book that I got when he came here on tour first sparked a solid interest. I didn't get serious about magic until I saw P&T's cups and balls.

I was reverse indoctrinated. I got a magic set when I was a kid, before I even knew there was such a thing as magic.
What keeps me going? It is the love of managing the audience, the love of taking everyone on a ride into the land of fantasy with me. And you gotta love the gasps you get when you have completely taken them in.

During my childhood, I had a punch-out-and-assemble magic kit and had gone to see Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell perform, but that was not a big thing to me. what it took to really get me into magic was a dyslexic brother. George wanted to learn magic, so I read the instructions, learned how to do the trick, and taught him. After a while, I started doing library research on my own, located tricks I wanted to learn, and began adding magic to my puppet shows and storytelling. Now, I perform for libraries in my area (I went back to school, got a Master's in Library & Information Science, and became a children's librarian).
Why do I still do it? It's cool, and it helps me fight arthritis.

This is an old post but I just wanted to share.
I was watching "Brain Games" on the National Geographic channel where they used magic to demonstrate how the brain works. It reminded me of how I got started. I had a Psychology class in college about 45 years ago and I had to give a presentation on how the brain interprets what the eye sees. For my presentation I bought a cheap magic trick at the local toy store and used it as part of my oral presentation. I remember the reactions from the professor and fellow students. Everyone was asking me how I did the magic. I got an "A". After I graduated, I got my first job and started buying magic tricks. When I started raising a family, I put it all away in a suitcase and only pulled it out occasionally for my kids' birthday parties. After I retired, I got into magic again and it became an obsession. The difference now is that I understand the value of practice.

I got into magic when I was maybe 7 or 8 when I watched Mark Wilson on TV and my parents got me a magic kit. Also, I remember my babysitter doing tricks. Then one day, my parents took me to Barry's magic shop, the coolest place on earth, where reality gets checked at the door and fantasy becomes reality. I was quite spoiled having Barry's magic shop 15 minutes away from where I lived as a kid. There are lots of magicians who don't have the luxury of growing up in a big area like DC. Anyway, that's how I got started.

Gambling and cards have always been there, as well as an admiration and excitement of magic in general. That said, I didn't get serious about _magic_ until I saw David Blaine do the two card monte. Just got me in the heart that one.

I am a late bloomer when it comes to magic. Well, I always was interested in the field to some extent but it was not until I was 18 when I got serious, read Card College and all the other classic books on the subject. The thing that got me hooked was watching a magician, the usual. Since that time I read and watched so much material that it is unbelievable.

How do we build our sense of what's real beyond our immediate sensations?
Are there socially addressable layers to reality and if so what permits a thing to move between those layers?
