This morning I walked into the house from exercising, and my SO takes one look at me and says:
"I can't believe how you are dressed, you have sunk to a new low..." Now, I had on my long jammy bottoms (blue, yellow and white stripes), a long sleeve hoodie (black and red checked tartan), orange athletic socks, suede slippers and a burgundy VTec hat. My response: "Are you kidding, I see people dressed like this in church...and I'm headed for the shower!" I understand good dress. I used to love to dress up for the theater, etc. But it seems to be out of place in this day of dress-in-the-dark. Have I just given up and lost whatever class I had, or am I just "getting with it"? Being a man of class, I'm going to kindly refrain from commenting on your choice of morning attire.

From what you've described I think it sounds great, but it wouldn't be first choice to wear my clown outfit when I exercise.

Keep dressing up mandarin. Especially for the theater. Would you rather people say, "***, that guy looks slick." or offer you a buck because they think you're homeless?

This reminds me of what my mother always told me as we traveled on airlines. She told me of the days when people used to wear their nicest sunday dress to fly on a plane. Now, people wear whatever they want. Is this bad? I think there is definately a change of personality when I put on my suit that fits like a glove. There is no way that I would market myself in my pajamas or even my favorite jeans. If I look good I feel good. I believe that will always be the case no matter what other people decide to wear. And I suppose if someone can actually say that they feel like a million bucks in their pajama pants, then I say go for it, but as for me, I will still put on my suit and tie.

Yes, I totally agree! Regarding jeans, does anyone try to match the colors anymore? Seems I see jeans being considered as matching any color or fabric-- have jeans been ruled "camelion clothes", suitable for use with anything? Even with sport coats for men?

Around here they dress up to go to the pizzeria, but I live in a yuppie neighborhood.

Worked a wedding a few years ago where the best man wore his prison jump suit.

Keeping this on a magic level, name performer Oscar Munoz told me, at a convention we were appearing at, that he ALWAYS dresses well when leaving the house, even if it's to take out the garbage!
This stems from a time at a supermarket where a young man told an older woman -- who turned out to be the young man's mother -- that he (Munoz)was a magician and had entertained at a party where the young man was in attendance. Oscar was dressed casually (he thought) for a supermarket but he could tell from the look on the women's face that she tkhought he was "down on his luck." Ever since then he has preached the gospel of "you never know whomn you'll meet." And he dresses accordingly! |

I followed the story of the color changing knives when you left the magic Café several years ago, and I have missed your wisdome ever since. Welcome back my Italian, Canadian friend.

Yachanin and Peter-
Thanks for the support. Frankly, I have always enjoyed being "dressed" but have to admit getting way more casual of late. And, yes, I have been in the situation of wishing I had given more thought to who I might meet unexpectedly... Jim
